Chapter 13

Kirsten kept her back to the door of the bunkhouse, looking across the room at the man and woman perched on one of the beds. Georgina Rogers had one hand on Johann Stein’s, and her head was hung low. Stein hadn’t looked up at Kirsten since she’d brought them into the bunkhouse, and Kirsten thought she could see tears in his eyes.

Kirsten waited several minutes before popping briefly outside the bunkhouse to check if anyone else was there. When the surrounding area had no movement, she stepped back inside, ready to question the man and find out what was going on.

‘You’re Johann Stein?’

The man nodded. ‘That’s my name, but she has nothing to do with this. Please, don’t take her. Don’t take her away from her kids.’

‘She’s got my kids,’ said Georgina. ‘She told me she’s got them.’

Stein looked up with eyes of horror at Kirsten. ‘You can’t do this. You don’t do this sort of thing. You’re clearly British service.’

‘I could be a mercenary working for anyone,’ offered Kirsten, wanting to keep her independence from the subject matter, and to try and find out what was really happening, ‘What’s so terrible that you’re going to put into motion that I shouldn’t fulfil my contract?’

‘You don’t understand the secret I have. It’s terrible. It could kill millions, start wars, and finish them. You can’t—you can’t do this.’

‘So, what, do you have information? Some sort of missile? I was told that you worked for the UK Defence, been looking at their nuclear arsenal and deployment abilities; is that right?’

The man hung his head. Georgina put her arm around him. ‘You need to tell her. If it’s as bad as you told me, you need to tell her.’

The man looked at the woman. ‘Don’t say that. She’ll think you know, torture you for the information when you know nothing.’

‘Then tell me the information and trust me,’ said Kirsten. ‘I’m all ears. I want to know what you’re on about.’

‘If I told you, would you believe me, or would you just carry out your orders anyway? Surely they told you why I’m so important.’

‘I told you, I’m a mercenary. As far as I’m concerned, I’m taking you in. If you want any other outcome, I’m here, and I’m listening.’

‘I don’t work on the nuclear side of things. I’m a biochemist, and I developed an agent. One that would devastate, kill with a rapid spread. You could plant it easily in a population. Inside of a week, they’d all be dead. It’s like a nuclear bomb, you understand?’

‘Surely there’s some deterrent against the biological weapon. It can be treated. You can put a cure on it.’

‘No. There’s not,’ said Stein. ‘I destroyed the work for that reason. Once I made it, looked at it; I thought this is too dangerous. If one side gets this, it will dominate the other side.’

‘I thought you worked for the UK. I thought you’d be at peace with that. After all, they’d hold it and keep it until they needed it.
