The next morning I got a call from Pierre inviting us to go horseback riding. We still had a couple of days to finish unpacking before Chris’s new job started. Monica was unable to come as she had gone back to work at the television station that morning.

Tatiana was there with Pierre but she had informed him that she had made other plans for the day before. That meant it would just be me, Pierre and Chris. Chris enthusiastically agreed, and we made plans to meet late that afternoon to go for the ride. That way we could unpack more and still go riding.

Chris and I met Pierre about three o’clock that day and Pierre drove us out of the city to a horse farm in the foothills of the mountains about forty miles away. I had packed a picnic dinner, and we pulled up to the riding stables around four o’clock.

Pierre was an experienced rider and was dressed for the task. He had on tight fitting brown jodhpurs, knee-high leather boots, and a cotton plaid shirt with bandana around his neck. It was difficult not to notice his huge bulge and Chris caught me taking it all in.

Chris and I had on jeans and comfortable cotton shirts. Pierre showed us how to saddle the horses, joking all the while about our mounts being hung like horses. He carefully tied the bag with our picnic dinner to Chris’s saddle, and then led us across the field toward the beckoning hills.

My horse was named Lightening, which I wasn’t informed of until we had already begun our ride. I wasn’t very sure of myself with a beast this size and the horse sensed it. Lightening took off fast toward the path most familiar, and Chris and Pierre had to dig in hard to keep up.

Once under the shade of the trees my horse slowed down to a trot, and I breathed a deep sigh of relief. Chris and Pierre caught up beside me on the wide path laughing, and I sheepishly returned theirs with a grin of my own.

We relaxed in our saddles and enjoyed the time out in the beautiful nature. The sun shone a little lower through the bright green trees, and after about an hour of Pierre taking us on miles of paths that he knew, we finally reined in at a shady spot far off the trail.

Pierre dismounted and led his horse back even further into a small clearing. Chris and I stiffly dismounted and followed him, our inner thighs feeling the strain and chafing of the horse ride. Pierre spread out the blanket after tying up his horse, and laid out the fare I had brought.

We joined him, and with a “pop,” we began our feast with a bottle of champagne. We then dove into the selection of cold meats, bread, apples, and grapes with a delight brought on by the combination of fresh air and healthy exercise.

After our delicious spread, we laid back and relaxed, my head resting on Chris’s lap and Pierre up against a nearby tree.
