Chapter 22 â Trial and Error
The next day, we focused on how to accelerate time, a skill our mentor claimed was invaluable but complex to manage.
âThe pace of time is relative, but its direction is not. You may alter its speed but not change the future. Employ this technique only when certain of whatâs to come. The farmerâs sprain was going to heal in a few days. After adding a bit of ice and a pinch of turmeric, I used my gift to nudge the healing along. Your adversary in the castle told you heâd return the boy soon, and any fool would realize youâd race back to the village to expose what youâd found.â
Mia scrunched her nose and shook her head. âHow are we to know what will happen. Every morning brings new surprises. This power requires foresight beyond what we possess.â
âCorrect, but in a real confrontationânot puttering with gamesâyouâll find none of your powers provide perfect foresight. What makes a master sorcerer has less to do with the depth of his magic but rather with the wisdom in how to apply it. What I teach you is but a fraction of what youâll become. Little is what youâre taught. Much is what you must learn on your own.â
Doubt overwhelmed me. âWhat if we donât measure up? What if we fail?â
He paused, took a deep breath, and gazed at us as if we were soon to graduate, and he to make his final farewell. âDo you think after my long years in this world, I chose you as apprentices on a whim? No. I recognized the goodness in you at onceâinnocent, yes, well-intentioned for sure. Donât forget, I came here as you did, cynical, confused, and doubting myself, but at my core, I discovered an untapped strength, as both of you will one day. You must tap that strength to grow, for I will not always be with you.â
With that, he announced we were done with the basics. Time to practice applying our magic.
