Selene finished helping Mesa with her homework and turned on her favorite show while she went back to work. She had one more hallway to mop, and then she’d be satisfied. With a security code, she was able to access her apartment’s video feed and check on Mesa from anywhere in the house, but she knew her daughter well enough to know she’d be stuck to the couch for the next half hour, entranced by her cartoon.

She walked to the cleaning supply room for a fresh steam mop cover. Humming to herself, she turned the corner and ran right into Rio.

“Oh my gosh, I’m sorry.” Selene stepped back as ripples of heat flowed throughout her body. Her attraction to him hadn’t diminished. It might never. But she wished it wouldn’t take her breath away.

“No, it’s my fault.” He looked down at her. His ocean eyes looked as though a storm lay overhead. There’d be no thunder and lightning or hurricane winds, but a steady rain. “I wasn’t paying attention.”

“Are you okay?” She didn’t like the way her arms longed to reach out for him.

He straightened his shoulders and swallowed. “Yes.”

Rio wasn’t telling the truth, but Selene didn’t know if it was her place to pry.

“I just got off the phone with my dad.” He shifted his weight to one hip and crossed his arms.

“Is everything okay with your family?” She’d loved Rio’s family, even though his dad never did seem to like her. Selene’s own father had died when she was too young to remember, and she’d wished she’d had a father as protective of her as Jordan Whitmore was of his sons.

He drew in a breath. “Yes. Hudson’s announced he’s running for governor, and my father’s just checking in to make sure I’m behaving.”

“Governor, really?” She smiled. “I can see that. Hudson was always kind of bossy.”

Rio chuckled. “Yes, he was. Nine years older than me, so I guess he thought he had a right to be.”

“Yeah, sometimes he was a little annoying.”

“And he hasn’t improved with age.” Rio grinned, and her knees went weak. If only the man didn’t look so good; then keeping her distance wouldn’t be so hard.

She was glad he appeared happier. “But I’m sure he’s still a good guy.”

Rio nodded, and her heart softened as shared memories dulled the sharp blade of what might’ve been. Perhaps she and Rio could be friends. Selene missed his friendship, and she hadn’t known how much until moments like this. He’d been good enough to let her keep her job, and he was kind to Mesa. Maybe platonic was possible, if she didn’t look too closely and let her heart be swept away by the tide in his eyes.

Rio’s smile ebbed as his stare intensified. A look she’d seen before came over him, arresting her. She was helpless when he watched her like that, with the concentration of his gaze as he took in her face and the shape of his mouth as his eyes lingered on her lips.
