Chapter twenty

Outing

As he headed to the junior suite to get ready, Silas found himself processing the evening's revelations. The family meeting had gone better than expected, but now he faced the challenge of looking presentable for dinner with Lana. The clothes he'd borrowed from his grandfather's wardrobe were fine for estate business, but a proper dinner required something better.

He pushed open his bedroom door to find a garment bag hanging from the wardrobe, along with a leather case on the bed.

"Bonereghard's efficiency strikes again," he muttered, unzipping the bag.

Inside hung a perfectly tailored dark blue jacket with subtle silver threading, matching trousers, and a crisp white shirt. The cut was modern but classic, nothing ostentatious but clearly expensive. A note in Dale's handwriting was pinned to the jacket.

For the Beckham heir's social obligations. Consider this a bonus for our partnership. The colors will complement your complexion and station without appearing presumptuous. Return in good condition, as I may need to borrow it back.

Silas held up the jacket, impressed by how well Dale had estimated his size. The merchant's attention to detail continued to impress him.

"What do you think, Diog? Will this do for impressing Registry girls?"

The wolf cocked his head thoughtfully, then huffed what sounded like approval.

A knock at the door interrupted his examination. "Enter."

Bonereghard glided in, carrying a silver tray with several small bottles. "Master Dale anticipated you might require suitable grooming accompaniments. He has provided options."

"Cologne?" Silas picked up one of the bottles, noting the elegant script on the label. "I'm not sure I'm a cologne person."

"Nonsense," came Nerissa's voice from the washbasin. Her face appeared in the water's surface, grinning. "You absolutely need something. Not too much, just a hint. Something that says 'mysterious estate lord' not 'desperate tavern patron.'"

"Any particular recommendations from the estate's romance expert?"

"Well," Nerissa's expression grew thoughtful, "Dale sent three options. The sandalwood is very masculine, earthy but sophisticated. The cedar and amber is more assertive, good for making an impression."

"But this one," she gestured with a watery tendril toward a dark green bottle, "smells like the spring waters of the Emerald Isles. Fresh, clean, with just a hint of something wild underneath."

Silas uncorked the green bottle and took a careful sniff. The scent was complex but not overwhelming, reminiscent of morning mist over deep forests with an underlying warmth that suggested hidden depths.

"That one," he decided. "Not too much, though."

"Just a touch at the collar and wrists," Nerissa advised. "Let it warm with your skin. And Silas? Confidence is more attractive than any cologne. Remember that."

Silas changed quickly, appreciating how well Dale's choices fit. The jacket moved naturally with his shoulders, and the fabric felt expensive without being flashy. He applied the cologne sparingly, following Nerissa's advice.

"How do I look?" he asked, turning for inspection.

"Like a proper lord," Bonereghard approved. "Dale has excellent taste. You appear prosperous but not ostentatious, confident but not arrogant."

"The collar needs adjusting," Nerissa added helpfully. "And maybe run your fingers through your hair once more. Perfect. Lana won't know what hit her.
