Chapter 14
-
The Tomb of Montuemhat
“Wow, we have actually made it into the tomb of Montuemhat,” said Kate with a sigh of relief, as she slipped off her backpack, then slid down the wall. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, she clicked its plastic buckle, before flipping the top flap back to reveal a metal stake which only just fitted in from corner to corner. “Time for lunch, come on, I have a pack each.” Out came three packs of food, each carefully wrapped in a Winter Palace napkin, over which she had stretched the food wrap supplied by Three.
Alex and Cairo looked at Kate in confusion. They had tried so hard to get into this tomb, yet now they were inside, she wanted to stop for a picnic. Seeing their confusion, she motioned for them to sit and eat. “This is a big tomb according to Alex’s dad, so eat up. You have your own drinks.” Seeing Alex delve into his backpack, she added, “Just your drink, as you have the spare food. We’ll need that later if we get stuck in here. We don’t need it now.”
Alex and Cairo looked at each other as “stuck in here” failed to fill either of them with any confidence, though turning back to Kate they each took a pack of food. Thankful to her for packing their lunch, even if it was only items borrowed from the breakfast buffet, they remained concerned by the thought of possibly being in this tomb so long that they needed extra rations.
“What are we looking for in here, Kate?”
“You know as much as I do, Alex. Thoth pointed us to the tomb under the rest area in the Valley of the Kings. Thanks to your onions, they pointed us to where we are now.”
“Actually, it was onion skinning.”
“Whatever … but if you hadn’t done it, we wouldn’t be here.”
Alex wasn’t sure by the way Kate had said this, if she was praising or rebuking him. He decided, knowing Kate as he did, that it would be turned into a rebuke if anything went wrong, whilst being totally ignored if all went well. As was so frequently the case when dealing with Kate, no response was the best course of action, and anyway, arguing about it would not change the fact that they were here, so he reiterated, “Yes, Kate, but what are we looking for?”
“We’ll know it when we find it, but if there’s nothing, then I’ll just say his name again.”
Any look of confusion or concern on the faces of the boys was now replaced with one of horror.
Kate smiled, “Don’t worry. I’m not that stupid!”
Sitting on the dusty floor as they ate, with their backs to the entrance, they looked down into the tomb. Just a few metres ahead they were faced with a wall of darkness. Kate was the first to shine her torch down there. It illuminated corridors which went both to the left and to the right, so which way were they to go?
The tomb was in bad repair, around them there were few obvious hieroglyphs.
