“Where are you taking me?” Luka dropped onto the seat of one of the black town cars that was constantly chauffeuring them around.

“To see the studio. One of the label’s new bands is coming in for a sound check today and to record a few tracks.”

Luka was confused. “What does that have to do with you?”

“They’re kind of my boys. I found them about a year ago on YouTube and hooked them up with the talent rep and, well, here they are. I’m helping them lay down their first few tracks.”

“That’s really cool, Nicky. I like that you’re getting involved with new bands, using your influence to help people.”

Nick shrugged, modest as usual about all the wrong things. “They would’ve done it on their own eventually. They’re good. You’ll see.”

“What’s the band called?” Luka reached for one of the bottled waters in the minifridge and took a sip. He liked the bigger cars’ extra amenities.

Nick snorted quietly. “Accidental Handjob.”

Luka nearly spit his water right back out. “They’re called what?”

Nick grinned. “They say it’s a long story. Now personally I’m kind of wondering about the lead singer and the drummer.”

“Really? Band intrigue?” Luka smiled. “So after this sound check thing, then what?”

“Dinner for sure, and then you wanted to show me the dance studio. We could go bother Jeana. She has classes going tonight, right?”

“Yeah, and that’s Miss Jeana when she’s teaching.”

Nick guffawed. “Do they call you Master Luka?”

“No, but maybe you should.”

“Psh. Yeah, right.” Nick pinched him hard in the side. “Shut up. Now behave. We’re here.”

The studio was smaller than Luka would’ve imagined. Less glamorous for sure. He didn’t know if he’d been expecting groupies sniffing coke from ashtrays or rappers hanging around in tracksuits and gold chains…. There was none of that. Not by a long shot.

All he saw was a group of what looked like high school boys in grubby jeans and plaid button-downs. They all greeted Nick with high fives and enthusiastic hugs.

“Guys, this is Luka. Luka, these are the guys.” Luka waved but sighed inwardly. His poor Nicky didn’t have a whole lot of social grace. The whole group was checking him out rather inquisitively. Maybe it was preconditioning, but Luka thought he saw two of them exchange a significant look.

“Nice to meet you. Where are you from?”

One of them spoke up. “Portland.”

“Maine?” Luka asked.

The cute blond one in the back snorted. “Oregon.”

Nick leaned over and spoke quietly. “These guys originally tried to get a deal with Sub Pop, but I guess the renegades are getting conservative in their old age.”

What is he talking about? Renegades? “Sub Pop? What’s that?”

“Big alternative label? Seattle? Nirvana?”

Luka shook his head.

Nick chuckled and leaned over to kiss his nose. Right in front of the band. Holy shit. Luka was stunned.

“You’ve got a lot to learn about the music industry if you’re going to be with me, babe,” Nick murmured before he brushed another kiss, this time on Luka’s lips. Then he seemed to remember where he was and sat up quickly, clearing his throat.
