XXIII - Did She Learn Too Late To Love Him?
Amor heard the truth from Christmas.
She was horrified when the young girl came in the next day and told her about the strike. Christmas was looking for work, and Amor knew, since George had been absent from early morning, that he was engaged in a similar quest.
She waited anxiously and impatiently for his return, and when he came, late in the evening, footsore and heartsore and hopeless, her heart overflowed with pity for him.
She paid him a thousand little attentions that once would have given him the greatest happiness, but he did not seem to notice them.
She tried to force herself into a cheerful mood and to induce him to talk, but she saw, with a great fear, that he seemed to shrink from her.
She did not tell him of Christmas Cherryâs visit, she did not want to introduce the painful subject of the strike.
And George said nothing to her. As soon as he could, he went to his room and she was left alone again.
Several days passed in this way, and every morning George Chesterland went away, and every night he returned, more hopeless and wretched.
Amor watched him with fear and anguish. She longed to share his trouble. She felt that she would give the world if she could press his poor, pale face against her breast and tell him to cease his worry and to hope for the best.
She would have told him that and more, had she possessed the courage.
The love he had longed for and prayed for, was his. His affliction, his grief, his sadness, had opened her eyes to the truth.
She loved her husband. Poor man! Poor workman! Whatever he was, she loved him with her whole heart, with a passion as intense as he had given her.
A hundred times she wished he might know the truth; but the fear that he no longer cared made her too timid to show her love.
She knew they could afford a servant no longer, so she dismissed the maid and bravely did the work herself.
But George did not notice the girlâs absence or the burned face of his wife.
Christmas had not been near Amor since the morning she had told her about the strike, and at last Amor decided to go down to see her, to get wise counsel.
She found Christmas at home, busily engaged at some copying that had been given to her by an acquaintance of one of her teachers.
Laying her work aside, she greeted Amor lovingly, and inquired anxiously after George.
âI have come down to talk with you about him,â Amor said sorrowfully. âI have been so wretched for days, and I knew no one could set me straight but my little angel.
âGeorge has not found work,â she continued. âI know by his manner, although he has never even told me yet about the strike. He is so unhappy, Christmas, and he never pays the slightest attention to me. Do you think he has learned to hate me?â
The pitiful appeal in Amorâs voice stirred gentle Christmas.
