“You kill me,” Jhonny whispered across their booth at Crazy Pie. “Good for you having a quickie between the tikis. Chris seems so hot for you, bro.” He clinked soda glasses with Ever. Jhonny had never seen his best friend look so happy or… satisfied.

“It was fun.” Ever grinned.

“He’s a little wacky though, dude, but I gotta say, giving his clothes up to a homeless man… I kinda liked that.”

Ever grinned. “I need to talk to him about that. Hey, Vanessa.”

Vanessa came by their booth at the same moment that Chris and Darren came out of the john.

Jhonny couldn’t fail to notice the frisson of attraction between his sister and Darren.

“Hi, beautiful.” Darren’s gaze remained on her long after a red-faced Vanessa deposited their menus and walked bang-slap into a wall as she returned to the kitchen.

“She’s beautiful,” Darren said, watching her walk away.

“She’s my sister.”

Darren flicked a glance at Jhonny. “No shit? Wow. Can you introduce me?”

Over lunch of pizza and salad, Jhonny watched the way Darren drew his sister out of her shell. He’d never seen her smiling so much.

“You mind if I take her to the movies with her friends Saturday instead of you?” Darren asked Ever after returning from an alleged trip to the restroom.

“Not at all. Go for it.”

Chris was acting a little weird. He kept commenting on the restaurant’s décor and how the ancient Egyptians had invented the first pizza.

“Only it wasn’t called pizza,” he said. “It was usually sweet, too, since we ground our wheat by hand and poured honey over it.”

Everybody stopped eating.

“We?” Ever asked.

Chris didn’t have a chance to respond. Vanessa arrived with 84

four gigantic slices of Italian caramel cake.

“You guys are my guinea pigs,” she said, her gaze on Darren.

“Something I’ve whipped up for the dessert menu.”

Jhonny slid his fork into the moist cake. He swallowed a generous bite.

“God, sis, you can cook,” he said. The others just moaned.

“This is the finest cake I ever tasted,” Chris declared. Vanessa lit up when Darren stood and kissed her cheek.

“You’re better than Martha Stewart,” he said.

Jhonny caught Ever’s gaze. He knew that, like Jhonny, Ever wanted nothing more than Vanessa’s happiness.

She giggled and ran off to the kitchen, avoiding the wall this time. She seemed a hundred years younger than she had that morning.

Ever reached across the table, touching Jhonny’s hand. “You heard from Mike Fletcher today?”

Jhonny shook his head.

“Call him… see how the audition went.”

Jhonny balked at the idea.

“Can’t hurt,” Ever insisted.

Jhonny hated chasing after guys. He sighed, pulling his cell phone out of his pocket. Before he could make the call, he received one. From Mike. He couldn’t keep the smile from his face.

“Hey,” he said. “How did it go?”

“Damned fine. Listen, they loved me here at the studio. They just gave me half a dozen passes to the Universal Studios tour for free. We can go on rides and take the tour as well. They’re good for today only.
