Chapter 21

Lieutenant Amadeo Siravo stretched as a shaft of sunlight from the small room’s window woke him up. He smiled at the luxury and ease of this assignment. He considered taking his time finding the bratty noblewoman so that he could continue trying to convince one of the Lady’s maids to join him in his bed. He had not succeeded yesterday, but it had been fun trying. Eventually, he would find Lady Evelina, and when he did, he imagined he would be heralded as a hero. He hoped that would help push him up into the rank of captain sooner rather than later. It would be nice to show up the other young caravan guards and earn a place above them.

After taking his time dressing, he came downstairs to find some food. The Count had given them an ample amount of gold to fund their trip. Meat for breakfast was usually too rich for his purse, but since it was not his purse he was paying with, he would indulge himself this morning. He smiled as he walked past his subordinate, who was trying his hand at ingratiating himself with their female traveling companions.

Amadeo walked up to the counter where an attractive young kitchen maid was wiping glasses. He introduced himself and asked for a large helping of bread and cheese and a sampling of all their breakfast meats.

At hearing his name, the girl behind the counter said that she had a message for him from the stable boy. Ah, him, he remembered with an internal grimace. He had almost forgotten that Giorgio was part of the group. He laughed inwardly at having made him sleep in the stable last night. That is what he got for not knowing his place, he thought.

His mirth ran out quickly as what the girl was saying smacked him right in the face. “The kitchen door has been really popular of late. First, a rumpled young woman, who Giorgio says was the Lady Evelina. Can you believe that?” She leaned in, and while twirling a lock of hair around her finger, whispered loudly. “A noblewoman with mud on her clothes and sticks in her hair came calling to our humble little establishment. And in the middle of the night, no less.”

He smacked his hand on the counter. She jumped and took a small step back. “Go tell Giorgio to ready the horses.”

“I can’t. He’s gone,” she said quietly.

He looked out the window and cursed the position of the sun. The morning was almost gone. He canceled his breakfast order and ran back up the stairs to grab his belongings. He shouted, “Move your ass, Rupert! We’ve got to go.”

His fellow caravan guard, who was only his lesser by a few years, looked up from the hand he had been flattering. He rolled and pointed his eyes at the lady belonging to the hand and started to speak, but Amadeo had already leaped back down the stairs and cuffed him hard behind the head.
