Sophie took the braid out of her hair. For this mission, it would actually be better for her to look older than she was.
Jack paced in her room. âEllieâs really nice. You shouldnât do anything to hurt her.â
âIâm not going to hurt her.â Embarrassment was likely. But embarrassment didnât hurt.
âOkay.â He wrung out his hands. âItâs just, I really like her, and if you do something so she doesnât come backââ
âWe have to get rid of her. We donât have a choice.â Sophie didnât think it would help to mention that she and Jack were only going to be at the Westons for five more days, which wasnât even long enough that theyâd have another evening with Ellie. âSheâs not gonna let us set up the traps, and we have toââ
âI know, I know, just . . . get it over with.â
She nodded. âItâll just be a minute. I need you with me, though.â
âThat wasnât part of the deal.â
âHow am I supposed to do this without you?â
Jack groaned.
âWhatâs the problem, Jack?â
âI just . . . donât want to see Ellie get hurt.â
Sophie raised her eyebrows. âWhat, do you like her?â
âNo!â Jackâs cheeks turned pink. âSheâs, like, eight years older than me.â
âBut you think sheâs hot.â
âNo. Thatâs gross.â
Sophie rolled her eyes a little. She wasnât sure what Jack saw in Ellie anyway. Ellie had stupid short brown hair and a stupid nose piercing, and she was all curvy like a teenager. âWhatever. But donât you think this familyâs safety is more important than Ellieâs feelings?â
Jack perked up at thatâSophie knew using the word âfamilyâ would have an impact. He nodded solemnly. âOkay. Letâs go.â
Sophie stepped out into the kitchen, where Ellie was getting Ashleigh into her high chair. Jack followed behind, but he sat at the table, just far enough away from Sophie that sheâd be able to make out Ellieâs thoughts.
âHi,â Sophie said.
Ellie turned. This the troublemaker? Sheâs adorable. Eh, seen that before. Kid I used to watch at the swim club, oof. âHi Sophie. Weâre gonna eat in a few minutes, are you hungry?â
âYeah.â Sophie put on a sweet smile. âThereâs a bakery in the city. Homestyle Bakery? You should go pick up some muffins.â
