SYDNEY

Excitement surged through Sydney at the sight of the dark, blurry shapes in the deep, far off to the east. There it is! New Pearlaya!

She also remembered her mother’s warning to not be overeager when first glimpsing them. “They’re just the same as mountains, Sydney,” Nattie had said. “They always seem closer than they actually are.”

In that moment, Sydney didn’t care. The mere hint of the underwater mountains was enough to pain her cheeks from grinning so wide. We’ll be there soon.

She turned to point the sight of the mountain chain out to Garrett, but saw him off racing against Owens. Trying to determine who was fastest, who could make the biggest splash, who could hold their breath the longest—it all almost made Sydney wish she hadn’t reconnected the two.

Why are you sucking up to him, Weaver? She wondered. Neither of you would have been caught dead hanging out with each other back at school.

To judge their behavior now, she would have guessed they had been inseparable on land.

Typical guys. Get two of them together and they turn into little boys where everything’s a contest. She frowned at them, Garrett in particular. I thought you’d be excited to see all of this with me.

Sydney had known who Garrett was since kindergarten, but no one would have said they were especially good friends before the last couple of years. She had been leaving tennis practice when she saw him sitting on the concrete ledge under the old elm tree outside of school. What began as an act of pity, an offer to drive him home, led to daily routine. They argued and laughed like brother and sister now, or at least that’s how Sydney viewed him. Every so often, their spats would take a more serious turn when Garrett suggested they date. Sydney always steered those conversations away from what Garrett liked to call “the talk.”

In such times as those, Garrett would be mad at her for a few days and then act like nothing happened, just as he had been angry with her outside Crayfish Cavern. Sydney still couldn’t fathom why he refused to see things could become weird between them if they dated, and worse if they ever broke up.

He doesn’t understand that though, she knew. His parents never broke up. He doesn’t know how messy it can get.

Sydney looked to the east again, butterflies fluttering in her stomach at the knowledge of who awaited them there. What will you do when you see us, Daddy? Will you be like Garrett and act like nothing bad ever happened? Like you didn’t come visit us every few years only to leave again without saying goodbye?

She turned her gaze away from the view, the fluttering in her stomach dying when she spotted Nattie in the distance. Or did she keep you from us? Sydney wondered, swimming for the surface and air. Just like she kept us from ever visiting this world?

Sydney took her breath and dipped back below the water, morphing to her full-on dolphin form, wanting the sleek body that made it easier and faster to swim.
