Title: The Infinite Diary. Tribute to Seraphina, Codex 1 of 12, Entry #2

This day finds me preparing to move from this place with the night. Leaving had not been my plan but has rather been spurred by the sin-eater of whom I have writ. Tis her will that ushers me from Bath, and of this I now give tell.

After saving her from those dutiful Franks, I returned unto my lodging, beating the rumors which were beginning to flood the lanes. As I walked, I beheld the sin-eater galloping away on the horse she’d thieved, dark hair whipping in the wind. She saw me as she rode, setting one last puzzled look upon me whilst making flight to the gate.

Two morns later, which is this day, a young lad rapped upon my door. He handed a letter unto me, sealed with wax, and I divined from his humours that he had received it from the sin-eater. I took it from his hand, but he yet lingered with expectance. “Say why you loiter, boy.”

“Begging your pardon, sir, but the lady did say I would be paid for this delivery.”

“Did she now?”

“Aye, sir.”

This almost brought a smile unto me. Twas quite cheeky, the sin-eater promising coin which was not hers to promise. Yet I fetched my purse and withdrew a handful of silver, giving it forth. The lad looked at the coins in his palm, his smile as wide and as toothless as the Thames, and he was away.

Here have I transcribed the sin-eater’s letter, which was writ in the Lombardic tongue and scripted with brave elegance:

Dear Man,

I am she for whom you intervened by the wharf. For your assistance, I offer my gratitude. However, though your aim was noble and true of heart, you have left me charged as a fugitive of this land, in which I am a foreigner without rights. You did not slay the Franks who criminally assaulted me, thus am I yet hunted by them and the court of Wessex. Furthermore, my dutifully earned wages were lost during your intervention, and I am unable to continue my virtuous work in the name of God for fear of capture. Thus have you rendered me completely without means. Now shall you make amends, as your actions have birthed this quandary. Tomorrow eve, you shall follow the northeasterly road from Bath into the hills. I shall rendezvous with you on the road at a place and time of my choosing. With you shall you bring to me all necessary equipment and rations for travel and as much coin as can be gathered. I care not how you acquire these provisions. These things you shall do in restitution for the ills you have brought upon me, and you shall say no word of this matter to any soul, living or dead.

Thence did I truly smile. I have come to expect all things from all people, and too rarely find myself surprised. Yet did this letter surprise me for its brazen tone and wicked twists of truth.
