“I am finally rocking this stupid thing!” I declared, brandishing my lute like a sword.

“Just in time to learn the Song of Birth for your godchild,” Aysel said.

“There’s a birth song? Does this mean I have to be present for the delivery?” I asked, almost dropping the instrument.

“Yes.”

“Dang it!” I flopped down in a chair near Aysel’s. “But if that’s the case, you better brush up on your lute skills, too. There’s a fifty percent chance you’ll be the godparent.”

“I think not,” Aysel said.

Asahi and Kadri told Aysel and me when they first announced Kadri was pregnant, that they wanted us to be their children’s godparents—Aysel because he was Asahi’s twin, and me because I was Kadri’s marriage trustee. However, they couldn’t decide who should get the first child—because apparently it’s a big thing to be the godparent of the eldest child—so they decided if they had a girl, I would be the godparent, and if they had a boy, it would be Aysel.

As Aysel was borderline disgusted with all the cheer and emotional warmth that entailed being connected to Asahi and Kadri, he was particularly adamant that they should have a girl.

“No way. I’ve had to play a lute at these celebrations for five years. The least you could do is join me in my misery.”

“I’ve been meaning to speak to you about that.”

“My mad lute skills?”

“No. Your upcoming nuptials.”

I scowled and put the lute on the ground. “Marrying Devin is not going to make me miserable.”

“Perhaps not,” Aysel acknowledged. “Instead it will merely drive you crazy. Time will tell—though I hope it does not negatively impact our plans.”

Aysel and I were co-conspirators, and if we played our cards right, we were just a short ways away from becoming the co-administrators of the MBRC.

“You better get me a really nice wedding gift,” I complained.

Aysel frowned. “I already gave you a nice gift.”

“Yeah, for my wedding shower—and you so owe me for letting you get out of attending that party.”

“The gift was a bribe so I wouldn’t have to,” Aysel said.

“Whatever. So what about my wedding? You can’t squirm out of attending now. I already handed in your RSVP. You’re in the headcount for the reception.”

“About that, I was wondering if it was too late for me to add an additional RSVP.”

I stared at the high elf. “An additional one? Why?”

Aysel audibly ground his teeth. “Because I have a date.”

My jaw dropped. “You’re serious?”

“Perfectly.”

“You hoodwinked someone into liking you?” I asked, baffled by the idea. Aysel and I were friends for life, but the guy has the personality of a rabid wolverine and the exterior of a porcupine.

Aysel glared at me, his silver eyes gleaming in the dim lighting of the hall. While his glares weren’t unusual, I couldn’t miss the vulnerable set of his mouth. I was probably the first person he was telling about his…date. (I had to be, or the MBRC would be whistling with gossip!)
