Odalie was reluctant to leave the party. She and Tanner had a long conversation about his work and his regrets. She hadnât seen him for such a long time, not since their motherâs birthday when she and John and Heather sneaked into Dallas to have lunch with him.
âI wish you could talk to Dad,â Odalie said sadly.
He grimaced. âMe, too, but thatâs not realistic.â He shook his head. âGod help me, he never lets go of a grudge.â
âIâm sorry.â
âYeah, sprout. Me, too,â he said gently. He bent and kissed her cheek. Around them, the party was winding down and guests were leaving. He noted Stasia coming toward them.
âI think your companion is ready to leave,â he pointed out.
She glanced toward Stasia, who was motioning to her. Apparently, Odalieâs best friend wasnât anxious to talk to her ex-husband again.
âI guess so,â Odalie said. She hugged her brother. âYou take care of yourself, okay?â
He smiled. âIâll do that. You do the same. When you get the job at the Met, Iâll come and watch you onstage.â
âThat would be lovely. If I get it.â
âYou will,â he replied gently. âYouâve worked very hard toward that goal. Iâm proud of you,â he added.
âThanks.â
âStay out of trouble.â
She looked up at him with twinkling eyes. âYou wish. Youâre the one who needs that advice.â
He looked over her head. âBetter go. Stasiaâs getting antsy.â Stasia was motioning frantically now, and Tony was glaring at both of them.
Odalie laughed. âI guess so. Call me once in a while, will you? Just so I know youâre still alive,â she added, and with only pretended humor. She was really worried.
âI will. Whatâs your cell number?â
She gave him the new one. âI donât have yours,â she said.
âI use burner phones,â he replied easily. âThrowaways. Untraceable.â
It brought home what sort of work he did, and the danger of it. âCanât you find a job that wonât get you killed?â his sister asked worriedly.
âAnd what would be the fun of that?â he teased.
She glared at him.
He realized that she wasnât kidding. He hugged her again. âThanks for caring, sprout.â
âI always will. Take care of yourself as well.â
âIâll do my best.â
âAnd text me once in a while,â she replied. âPlease?â
âI will. I promise.â
âSo long.â
âSo long.â
