Chapter 16

Danny

I breathed a sigh of relief as Phoebe escorted the inspectors out through the Wentworth Meat-Processing plant’s lobby. Even though our facilities were, by far, the cleanest and most efficient in the state, the environmental organizations around here had been a thorn in our side for the past decade and they always held us under a microscope.

“Thank god, that’s over.” I sank into my office chair as Phoebe poured herself a glass of scotch.

“You want one, boss?” She held up the bottle.

“No, thanks.” I waved my hand. “I need to head home. I want to see my kids.”

“Oh…” She set her glass down. “That reminds me. I think I found you a new nanny. She’s got all the certifications, plus she has a bachelors in child-development. She said she’s available for interviews any day this week.”

“Actually.” I rubbed my chin. “Lena’s been doing a great job with the kids.”

“Are you sure?” Phoebe blinked. “You were pretty adamant about her not being a good fit.”

“Well, maybe I was wrong.” I shrugged. “I had my doubts about some of her parenting advice, but I can’t argue with the results. Vera’s behavior has made a complete one-eighty. Scarlet can’t get enough of her… I even think Daniel Jr. is starting to warm up to the idea of her staying on.”

“Are you sure Scarlet’s the one that can’t get enough of her?” Phoebe smirked.

“That’s enough of that nonsense.” I let out a heavy sigh. “I’m just happy to have someone around that knows how to get through to the kids, that’s all.”

“That’s all, huh?” Phoebe mimicked.

“That’s all,” I echoed.

“Well, I’m really glad things are working out, but I just want to remind you that this nanny is already a professional in her field. Lena was a waitress until a couple weeks ago.”

“I get that,” I rocked in my chair.

“If we pass up this opportunity to hire this girl, we might not get another chance.” Phoebe looked over the rim of her glasses at me. “You’re sure Lena is a good fit for the job?”

“Phoebe.” I groaned as I stood up. “I’m positive. Now go home and relax for a few hours. You’ve earned it.”

“You too, boss.” Phoebe sighed. “Make sure you get some sleep. You look like hell.”

She wasn’t kidding. In fact, I was so dog-tired that I fell asleep almost as soon as I got into the car. It was times like this that I was grateful to have a driver.

When I got home, I shambled, half-dead, into my office - more out of habit than anything - and collapsed onto the sofa, sinking into the soft leather seat.

“Hey, dad.” Vera had been sitting in the armchair in front of my desk. She stood up, shoving her hands into the pockets of her jeans.

“Hey, sweetheart.” She took me by surprise. I hadn’t even noticed her. I looked around, trying not to be suspicious. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah.” She nodded. “I mean mostly. I… kind of need to… are you busy? We can talk later if you’re tired.
