The upper curvature of logs absorbs more heat from the sun then vertical elements like flat siding and trim. The August test was on a day with the air temperature at 93° F; the December test had a 42° F air temp.

Also, be aware that the upper curvature of the log is affected by the weathering process more than the lower half of the log, and this area needs more attention in the recoating process. During this process, also be aware that each layer of finish has wearing qualities dependent on the thickness of the film. So, more coats will usually give more life and the type of the finish can cause varying coat thicknesses.

It was once thought that water-based finishes required more coats to reach the same film thickness as oil-based finishes. Today many water-based finishes have qualities similar to the oil finishes of the past.

Another common question is this: Are darker color stains or finishes better than lighter colored stains or finishes? The color is more important at the beginning stages, during log curing. Lighter colors will help reflect heat and because of this the logs may dry more slowly and not check or crack as much on the surface.

Later in the life of the building, a darker colored log finish may be selected, not because they are better but because weathered gray areas are not noticed as readily so people looking at your home may believe that the finish is lasting longer because the weathered areas are not as noticeable.

The main elements enabling a stain to perform to its maximum are the amount of solids and mildewcides, and its flexibility to extreme weathering. This is determined by the amount of sun exposure and the amount of ultraviolet light blockers in the stain. Most of these are limited by what can be added to the finish and yet be effective without being cost prohibitive. In areas of excessive moisture or insect activity, these additives are often used to boost performance.
