A significantly choppy swell and an incoming tide made the trip under the Golden Gate a bumpy one as she left the protection of San Francisco Bay and headed back out into the Pacific. Jaime decided to sail hard today, getting every bit of speed out of JayJay to start the next leg of her voyage. She tacked aggressively, feeling the speed bleed off and then hearing the crack of the mainsail filling again with wind as they were thrust forward on their new heading.
We had done it to ourselves she thought, the wind whipping her hair across her face. For whatever reason, the Chinese government not only developed but unleashed a killer virus that has wiped out almost every human on the planet. Jaime was too angry to cry. She welcomed the physical work and the occasional spray in her face. It took her mind off of how mankind had finally, and completely, failed itself.
All day long JayJay performed flawlessly in the blustery wind of the northern California coast. It wasnât until the sun was just about to set that Jaime realized that she hadnât eaten since breakfast. She brought JayJay around up into the wind and reefed in the majority of the sails. As she slowly swung back into a quartering wind, Jaime set the autopilot and looked back to the east. Land was long out of sight. She headed into the galley to make dinner, followed expectantly by Brandy.
Jaime rarely drank alcohol, but she enjoyed it when she did. Later, she dropped the empty bottle of chardonnay before she was even close to the sink and it rolled noisily back towards the dining table.
âOK, well thatâs enough of that.â Jaime said, realizing that a bottle of wine and one meal a day was nothing more than an invitation asking for trouble. Quickly preparing the boat for nighttime, she let Brandy out to do her business and fell asleep before she could turn out her bedside lamp.
It was light out when she awoke. Brandy was sitting quietly beside her bed, looking up at her. Jaime quickly looked at her watch and realized it was almost 9:00 oâclock. Her attempted jump out of bed quickly became a slow stroll as her stomach fluttered and her head started to pound. Taking a couple of aspirins and drinking two full glasses of water would help, she hoped. It wasnât her worst hangover but any hangover was uncomfortable, especially at sea.
After performing all her morning checks she charted their position and set a northerly course. Winds were following and light to moderate now but they would pick up during the day. They had drifted back south east in the north pacific current overnight which was normal but Jaime knew this wasnât a race.
The days easily rolled one into the other and it had now been seven days since she left San Francisco. They were making great time and JayJay had proven a very seaworthy running with the prevailing wind. The winds remained
