Chapter 29

I fell asleep with one of the books that discussed how the fairies and mages had collaborated to build the machine when they realized humans were beginning to over-populate and damage the balanced atmosphere. It was a brilliant bit of ingenuity to secure the continuation of a habitable, beautiful Earth.

I woke up to someone knocking at the door, I rose and answered expecting Lyella, but it was Gliss and Myrios. They were there to take me back to green. Gliss got the books I’d finished last night and rejoined Myrios in the hallway.

“Are all of you equally as informed about all of this?” I asked. Gliss grunted and Myrios nodded his agreement.

“I thought perhaps I’d see rumor of what we discussed yesterday, about some thinking magic would shift or leave, but there’s absolutely nothing in any of the texts I was given. I’d think for a faction to stop R.E.S.E.T they probably have more than lackluster gossip. It makes me wonder about their sources of information.” I said.

“Yes, throughout history it shows us that even blindly factions of creatures or humans broke away from each and acted in an impassioned, mostly violent way toward one another. Sometimes they claim it’s faith in one idea or another the way humans used to have faith in their various gods. Perhaps Guelph Ridge obtained a contradictory article of information centuries ago we’re unaware of. If they also made a grab for information, nobody I’ve come across has told me of it.” Myrios said. He had a bit of a low rumble to his voice I found calming.

“True enough” I said. “I suppose it’s pointless to speculate the ‘why’, when we can simply deal with the ‘how to move forward’ instead.”

We continued through the tunnels and hallways between the various rings. When I arrived, I saw Lyella, Lucy, and Drew waiting for us.

“The other five have already left then?” I asked.

“Yes, precautions must be made to protect Kanis’ magic above the rest of ours. The ten haven’t had a time manipulator for three hundred years.” Lyella responded.

“I hadn’t thought of that, but he’s another anomaly as far as magics go, right?” I asked. I’d never dreamed of meeting a time manipulator, though finding him with the ten made sense to me.

“Yes, but as far as rarities go, your type come around once every five hundred years, whereas a time manipulator is born a couple times every hundred years. It’s more rare, however, for them to ever realize it until they’re in a dangerous situation. Have you ever been through an extreme adrenaline rush and witnessed violence and wished you could stop time?” Lyella asked, leading us to what appeared to be a conference table.

“Yes” I said instantly, thinking of my parents. Myrios and Lucy both looked at me with furrowed brows.

“Normally that’s when time manipulators learn about their abilities. If never faced with that moment, a manipulator may never learn of their magic. It would be rather strange, to wander through life thinking you’re a null but knowing it’s impossible.
