Chapter 10

The big night - the one that could possibly make or break Kat’s Creams - is finally here!

And from the moment I woke up this morning, I’ve been biting my fingernails raw, right down to the quick. It’s my day off today, and Madison along with Tom (who is one of the part-time Saturday staff members) are taking care of the parlour while I spend the day ensuring everything is ready for tonight. Perhaps it was naive of me, but I never realised an event like this would take such careful planning; I’ve had to think about how many people might arrive, whether we’ll have enough ice cream for all, consider stocking up on extra amounts of the most popular flavours, the list goes on!

I’ve received promises from both my best friends that they will be there, but I have to be honest, I’m a little sceptical of that. Oh, of course, I know Emma is certain to turn up, and she’s told me that she is bringing Daniel’s sister Sophia along with her too. Hopefully, I can find some time to have a chat with them both, and see if I can sus out exactly what the problem is between them. Sometimes when you’re too close to a situation and have so much invested in it like Emma does, it can be tough to see things objectively, a fresh pair of eyes might be just what she needs.

But Ava … that’s another kettle of fish entirely. I can’t believe it’s been almost a month since we had the sleepover, and since then, no face to face contact, save for that brief moment by the pier when we bumped into one another. I have texted her, and to her credit, she has replied, but we haven’t really talked, despite the fact we clearly have plenty to talk about. She’s the only one who knows my secret, which is equal parts mortifying and relieving. Now someone finally is aware of what I’ve been struggling with recently, and though the thought of that makes me want to curl up beneath one of the parlour’s shiny silver tables and die, it does take the pressure to pretend everything is peachy keen off somewhat.

But since that bombshell was dropped and the truth about my debt has been revealed, I’ve not heard a peep about it from her. Her texts have mainly revolved around work, moving into her new flat, general gossip, but nothing deeper than that. I can’t help but feel a bit let down by her. I don’t know, I guess I just expected Ava to be there for me, as a shoulder to cry on, or even to offer some advice. I sigh as I jump into my car and switch on the ignition. I suppose we’ll have to see what happens after tonight, perhaps Ava and I will get chance to speak afterwards.

I park up my car in the town and rush to the pier, my trainers squeaking with each step.
