The spectacle should be overwhelming as in Michael Elliott’s Royal Exchange production in 1979, when they appeared suddenly at every entrance of the Roundhouse theatre at about twice the human size, hooded in white like the Ku Klux Klan, to a grinding noise almost unendurable to the ear. They loomed over the audience on every side in the sudden darkness, blocking all exits. Such terror was never achieved in Eliot’s lifetime. (87)
