Chapter 16

“Hey you. Where do you think you’re going?” Mary stood outside the WC entrance with her arms folded, apparently waiting for something. She occupied most of the small corridor space, leaving Cam trapped in front of the ballroom entrance.

Cam stopped still. “Home?”

Her impromptu visit to the Community Centre that evening had been a poor attempt to distract herself from her thoughts of Amy on her date. Instead, the empty corridors had had the opposite effect: they were a constant reminder of Amy’s absence.

She was about to slip out when Mary intercepted her.

“Nah. You’re coming with me.” Mary gestured towards the chit chat in the smaller room.

“I’d rather not..”

All Cam wanted to do was lift some weights or ride around in her bicycle until her brain no longer had the energy to ruminate. Were they laughing together? Was Amy making a joke and touching his arm, the same casual way she did with Cam?

Did it even matter?

“It’s not a question.”

“I’m really not in the mood.”

“That’s why you should join us. I’m not taking no for an answer.”

Cam hesitated a couple of seconds as Mary’s expression grew more threatening.

“Alright. But I’m not playing. I’m just keeping you company.”

“Sure, sure.”

The barbeque room was in full-on clandestine bridge mode. Four of the Community Centre residents sat around a green-clothed table, holding the cards close to their chrest, while still trying to spy on their opponents. There was a single half-drunk bottle of wine, and crystal glasses scattered across the table.

Other than the occasional good-natured taunt, the room was silent and focused. The players didn’t even notice Cam’s arrival.

“They’re finishing the turn, see? Martin has the ace but he’ll pretend he doesn’t, otherwise Pauline will get to him.”

“MARY.”

“I’m just explaining the rules to the newcomer.”

“Cam?” Pauline turned and her cheeks flushed beet red. “I thought you didn’t - you didn’t play. Please don’t tell Amy. You know she’s such a sweetheart, but she doesn’t let us lose a bit..”

“Now keep my grandbaby out of it, Pauline. Own your shit. You’re part of an illegal bridge ring for your own doing.” Mary declared.

“No worries,” Cam stepped forward, with an uneasy smile, “I’m not here to spy. I’m here to watch for a few minutes. My mouth is sealed.”

“She’s going to play afterwards.”

“Mary, I told you. I’m not playing.”

“The only reason you don’t want to play is because you don’t want to lose.” Mary signaled to the platinum blonde, frail looking woman in the corner. “Magda, bring her a chair will you. I’m going to get this show started.”

The pub was so poorly lit that Amy could barely distinguish John’s figure in front of her. Still the smell of mint from his slicked back hair was enough.

“I knew you were going to accept sooner or later.” John winked, signalling for the barista to bring them a menu. “When you approached me at the table a couple of days ago, I knew right away you were going to ask me out. I normally don’t like women taking initiative - a man gotta be a hunter, you know? - But you made me sweat for it long enough.
