come to me of their own accord, without my putting on
an act. This isn't the end by any means."
SUDDEN WEALTH
From the depths of a building on a narrow street in Kyoto came the tinkling sound of gold coins being scooped up and weighed on a tembin scale. "It has a vulgar ring," Yonosuke thought, quite without envy. He told himself: "No matter how much money I had, I would never be such a miser as to hoard it. I would spend it beautifully. Indeed, I would make all the courtesans in the country roll their eyes in wonder. Were I to lift my finger to summon but one of them, ten would come to me ecstatically at once."
But his conscience disturbed him. He reconsidered: "My father, however, is determined never to see me again. I cannot hate him for that, even slightly. The evil things people have said about me have come to my ears too, and I feel their scornful accusations to the very marrow of my bones. Perhaps . . . with due humility ... I should retire into a mountain hut and, by practicing abstinence there, overcome these worldly temptations."
In this penitent mood Yonosuke thought of the hermit
