âIâm sorry about Kim, she can be a littleâ¦outspoken. At times.â
âYes, I noticed that,â Sarah said. Head down, cardigan back on, busy stamping dates in a pile of books in front of her. Surprisingly, instead of appearing upset by Kimâs rudeness or the interruption of our lunch, she was smiling.
âShe has this thing with a guy on campus, silly back and forth pranks. Maybe he pulled another one on her today. Thatâs why she was a little testy, you know, back at the restaurant, sheâs really notâ¦â
âBeth, you donât have to apologize for her, itâs okay, Iâve heard worse.â She stamped one more book before lifting her head. âIâm actually glad we ran into her, orâ¦she ran into us. Tracked us down.â
âReally? Why?â
âI just am.â That piercing eye contact again.
âSoâ¦you wanted to ask me something?â
âWhat? Oh, yes. You know the childrenâs librarian? Ms. Martinez?â
Thatâs it? Do I know the childrenâs librarian? Thatâs why she held my hand? Why was I expecting something moreâ¦momentous?
âYeah, but I havenât been up there in years, sheâs still here?â Iâm a bad person, I thought. After discovering the bottom floors, Iâd never returned to the third just to visit, say hi, thank her for all those years she helped me to find books, or reach to a high shelf for one. Years of her patiently bringing me puzzles or blocks the library loaned out.
âYes, she is, but sheâs leaving. Sheâs getting married and moving to the east coast, I canât recall where, but somewhere out there, Virginia, or Maine? Anywayâ¦â
âSheâs getting married? Isnât she a littleâ¦old for that?â
âBeth, sheâs in her forties. Or early fifties. But even if she were seventy, you canât fall in love once youâre past a certain age?â
âNo, I mean, yes, I justâ¦I donât know, sheâs a librarian. I never thought about herâ¦dating. Itâs weird.â
Her smile slipped.
âIâm a librarian. I canât have a life outside of the library? Have feelings for someone? Fall in love?â
The back of my neck immediately warmed. Please donât tell me youâve fallen in love with someone. Please, just let me live in my little fantasy world for just a bit longer. Donât shatter it just yet.
âI didnât mean you, I didnâtâ¦of course you can. I donât even really think of you as a librarian anymore.â
The smile was back. âThatâs good, I think. Anyway, weâre throwing a little going away bash for her, Ms. Martinez, soon to be Mrs. Whatever-her-husband-to-beâs-last-name-is. And I wanted to ask if youâd like to go. To the party. With me. Be my guest.â
She didnât wince, but her clipped sentences made me think she was hesitant to ask so I answered quickly.
âYes. Iâd be happy to.â
âYes? Really?â
As if Iâd say no. âYeah, why not? Sounds like fun.â Actually, no, it didnât sound like fun. I imagined it was going to be pretty boring. A roomful of old folks listening to soft jazz, brandy snifters in hand, everyone discussing Nietzsche and Proust, thick support hoses and elbow patches all around. But, she would be there.
