BEFORE

1874 British newspapers use the word “camp” in reporting the arrest of “a man in female attire” at a fancy dress ball.

1954 Anglo-American writer Christopher Isherwood’s novel The World in the Evening includes the line “You can’t camp about something you don’t take seriously.”

AFTER

1960s–70s There is a rise in deliberate camp in popular culture, such as the TV series Batman (1966–68) and the film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970).

2019 The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City stages an exhibition celebrating all things camp, inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 book Notes on Camp.
