Dear Mr Moe,

I have just heard that Mr Louis Zukovsky is applying for a Guggenheim fellowship, and that he may be referring to me, so I am writing, if possible to save you the bother of writing to me. I do not know Mr Zukovsky personally. But he strikes me as one of about half a dozen American younger poets whom I could recommend – one of them, Tate, has of course had a fellowship already. I have published a couple of Zukovsky’s poems in The Criterion.

I have just sent you your form of enquiry about Lowenfels. If it were a question of picking one man or the other I should hesitate. On the one hand I have seen more of Lowenfels’ verse, and think him a little more developed as a poet. On the other hand I have seen none of his prose, and have seen a very acute and scholarly essay by Zukovsky on Henry Adams. So I am not comparing, you understand; and I don’t know what other candidates there are simultaneously; but I do sincerely consider both Lowenfels and Zukovsky distinguished and worthy, judging from their work that I have seen they should both do credit to the Foundation in later years.1
