SOFIE

He walks over to my bag. Picks it up. Then unzips it and turns it upside down. Making everything fall out. My pencils. My copybook. My Kindle. My bottle of water.

‘Kindle?’ he says, picking it up and turning it round and round in his hands.

‘Hmmmm, hmmm,’ is all I can say, my head nodding, my fingers tip-tapping against my lap.

He walks over to me, then sits on the edge of the bed and stares his hairy face into my face… Really close.

‘Just books, yes?’ he says.

I nod my head. And another tear falls.

He reaches a thumb to my cheek… and wipes away the tear.

‘If I give you this Kindle while I am out, you stay quiet… yes?’

I nod. Really big nods. Lots of really big nods. Making more tears come out.

He puts the Kindle on my lap and then turns around and walks his shadow out of the bedroom, closing the door tight behind him, leaving me in the dark, tied to this bed.

I reach for my Kindle and pick it up as much as I can. Then I hold down the power button until the light turns on.

I have fifty-five books on my Kindle that I have downloaded for free. I’ve read all fifty-five books lots of times. Lots and lots of times. And I have read the first pages of lots and lots of other books. As many pages as Kindle will allow me to read for free. I don’t mind reading books over and over again lots and lots of times. Books are even better the more times you read them.

I flick through the book covers on my Kindle screen, thinking about which one I should read while I am tied to this bed… I stop flicking when I hear his footsteps again, going down the stairs, the floorboards creaking. And then… a door opens with a squeak. And slams shut... He’s gone. Gone out. Leaving me alone in his smelly house. Tied to his smelly bed.

I press my finger at the cover of Three Times Lucky while I try to sniff the tears back up into my eyes and into my nose. Then I try to start reading. But it’s not easy. It’s not easy to read when your brain won’t stop thinking and thinking. I didn’t read one word for two weeks when I heard the family in Prague weren’t going to adopt me. That they adopted a girl from Greece instead. I would lie on my bed in the orphanage just thinking… thinking about everything I could think about. About having a father and a mother. About having a sister. Two sisters maybe. One older than me who looked after me. And one younger who I could look after. I think I would be a great sister. Only nobody knows I could be a great sister. Nobody will ever know it. I think about what my real father and mother are like. Who they are. Where they are. If I have real brothers or sisters… somewhere.
