The breakdown starts imperceptibly. A simple tweak in the communication changed the truth and replaced it with a lie. By simply emphasizing “you must not” rather than “you are free” (which was God’s first command), the serpent managed to communicate the wrong message.

God said man was “ free to eat from any tree in the garden.”2 The devil said, “Did God really say you ‘must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”3 He emphasized the restriction rather than the freedom. By using the very same words at the end of the statement, the serpent managed to manipulate the man and woman. The restriction that “you must not eat” was just on one tree, but he managed to make it look like it was on all the trees.

A good liar almost always uses the same words to create the illusion of truth. Partial truth is often more dangerous than an outright lie. That’s because it is harder to discern the deception since it has elements of truth in it. Liars know we would be more willing to ingest poison if it tasted familiar.

Here in the garden we see the first element of communication: words. Words are powerful; they are the vehicles by which ideas, opinions, and feelings are conveyed. Notice how Eve responded to the serpent’s question.

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”4
