“It happened there.” Logan’s vision blurred, and he felt a rising torrent of pain, helplessness and anger welling in him.

“You didn’t want to talk about it,” Paige said, and set a reassuring hand on his arm. “And I don’t want to spoil this evening—this moment. Or to have to rush you to Emergency.”

“It’s ok. I’ll just give you the thirty-thousand-foot version.”

She thought for a second, then spoke in her best Shakespearean flair: “I long to hear the story of your life, which must captivate the ear strangely.”

A smile broke free on his face, for just a second. “There you go, a little Tempest again. Now, I can’t refuse.”

“Really, you don’t have to do anything...”

“I drowned.”

She stopped in mid-sentence.

“Xavier and I—we both almost died. Jumped from up there.” He pointed to a ledge about halfway up the rocky spire, where a jagged series of rocks made ledges and served as easy handholds and stairs for young boys. “Absolutely reckless and foolish.”

“You were kids. What? Eight?”

“Six. And he was eight. Yeah, definitely didn’t know better, but our parents were too busy with the resort and the island politics to be that concerned.”

“What, no nanny or butler-bodyguards?” she asked, half-jokingly.

“No, and come to think of it, they were always acting kind of like they thought we were God’s chosen, privileged ones, and no harm would ever come to us, so why instill any common sense?”

“Got it. Didn’t need seat belts or helmets.”

“Definitely not, but still. We were kids. We dared each other to do stupid shit. Xavier especially. Not a lot of other playmates around so he needed me to mature faster, to catch up and be a worthy rival. And I wanted that, so bad. Wanted to prove myself.”

“That looks like a forty-foot drop, if you’re talking about that ledge there.”

Logan nodded and took a deep breath, watching the sky bleed out profusely all over the horizon, spreading its warm crimson toward them. “He jumped first, and I remember the perfect landing. Barely a splash like he was a knife dropped into pudding and swallowed right up. I didn’t even hesitate. Had to show him I could do it.”

He licked his lips, suppressing a shiver he knew Paige could feel. “I didn’t give Xavier enough time. Started my jump just as I saw him surface. But… he was screaming in pain. Later, I realized he tried to warn me. It was too shallow, and he went to deep. Broke both ankles and lost a toe. He was screaming so loud, so shrill. I tried to stop myself, wound up slipping and scraping half the way down instead of leaping farther out. I missed hitting my brother, but scraped half the skin off my arm, side and back on the way down. I thought I blacked out when I hit the water, because I don’t remember how I got out. Just that I was sure someone was there, splashing in after us. Sure it was our dad, and somehow he sensed our stupidity but just got there too late.
