As Greg returned to the present and sat with his vision and mission, he seemed calm and composed.

“What’s coming up for you now?” I asked.

“This all sounds achievable?” he answered with what sounded like a question.

“Is that a statement or a question?”

“Both?” he answer-asked. “I honestly don’t know how I’m going to do it all, or if I can do it all. But I’m kind of excited to try. And curious to see how this all plays out. It weirdly feels like a plan, even though it’s not really a plan.”

“It’s a story,” I explained.

The best stories are a kind of plan. You have a beginning, a middle, and an end. You have a protagonist who is trying to accomplish something. And you have challenges that are in their way. As a result, you have tension. Tension makes stories more engaging—not too much, not too little, just enough. It moves the story forward and moves us forward whether we are thinking, reading, hearing, watching, or experiencing the story.

“Can we turn this into a real plan?” Greg asked.

“Of course. But first, we need to go back to the ending to make sure it’s as good as can be. Because nothing ruins a good story more than a terrible ending,” I smiled.

It’s not just what happens in a story that is important—it’s how you feel and what kind of a tangible transformation you see that ultimately engages you. For that, you need to make sure that the ending you came up with at the beginning is good.
