The pair didn’t hear him when he crept by. Tom had caught bits of their conversation as he cut across a small path in the field beyond the makeshift cemetery but he wasn’t listening intentionally. Most of it was a garble of words; he was too lost in thought to pay attention.

Lost in thought? No, he was trapped in it. Waylaid. Harried and chased like a rabbit from hounds, his medicine-induced nightmare stalking him all the way out into the woods.

But even here, there was no escape.

Pale and sweat-drenched, Tom angled away from the pasture and paths, curving away from Gardens too. The last thing he wanted was a conversation. All he wanted to do was forget.

But the dream was seared into his mind.

Dream? No. It was more than that. Wasn’t it?

Because it sure as shit felt like more. It felt real. Felt like his eyelids had been pried open. There had been no escape from the pictures as they flooded in, suffocating him in memories long since forgotten. Memories he never even knew he had. The medicine had opened a floodgate and Tom was drowning.

He wiped sweat from his forehead. From his beard. From the fold where his stomach met his pants. He felt like he was swimming in it. Like he was sweating on the inside. Broiling.

One specific scene had replayed in his mind all morning. It had dug its barbs into him more than the any other. A single night that blazed bright in the forefront of his mind, stuck on a terrifying loop.

It was the night the children of Hope burned. The night he went looking for a drink in a house full of sleeping kids. A house full of sleeping kids that never saw the dawn. Save one.

Because of him.
