Chapter Six

Delaney went with Michael on a coffee run before heading back to the office. There was something so idyllic about this small town. It was basically two streets of brick store fronts that met at an angle ending in a small courtyard. The coffee shop was at the apex.

Michael, as usual, led the way. “Are you doing all right?”

“I’m fine.” Delaney trotted beside him trying to tamp down the foreboding in her gut. She was sure it had to do with the dead woman. “I’m just concerned about all the killings.”

“Yeah.” He nodded. “I think everyone is uncertain about what this means. Things like this don’t happen here.”

Michael opened the door for her and she walked through, taking her place in line. “I think it means there’s a serial killer on the loose.”

The person ahead of her in line glanced back with a quizzical look. As if anyone was out of the loop on the tragic news. If he didn’t know, then it was time he did. Delaney ignored him and kept her focus on the menu board.

“Of course.” Michael looked uncomfortable. “Why don’t we talk about something else?”

“Fine.”

“Hey, Michael!” The pretty blonde from the fair walked up to them and hugged him. She glanced at Delaney curiously, or maybe suspiciously.

“It’s good to see you too!” Michael laughed and rubbed the back of his neck. “Have you met Delaney?”

“No, I haven’t.” She disengaged from Michael and held out her hand. “I’ve heard so much about you.”

“Really?” Delaney glanced at Michael who was looking at anything other than her. She was under the impression the pair had met at the fair but maybe they were better acquainted than she thought. In truth, so much had happened that Delaney hadn’t even asked her usual inquisitive questions.

“Isn’t it terrible news about that poor woman,” the blonde said to Michael.

“Pansy, hon, I’m trying to keep the conversation light this morning.”

“Oh.” She let out a giggle and covered her mouth. “Sorry.”

In an effort to change the subject, Delaney asked. “So you’re our new Summer Queen?”

“Yes,” Her blue eyes lit up with excitement. “It all happened so fast. I didn’t think that they were going to pick me but then they did.” She drew her hand to her chest. A strip of cloth slid down her wrist. It was the exact bracelet that Robert had given Delaney. Same red and white with a band of another fiber she had yet to identify.

She reached out to touch it. “Where did you get that?”

“Oh, this?” Pansy twisted the bracelet. “I got it from some vendor at the fair. I thought it was pretty.”

“I have the same one.” Delaney held up her arm. “My boyfriend gave it to me.”

“Better be careful with that one. It’s a fertility bracelet.” She winked.

“Right.”

“Well, I have to go.” Pansy hugged Michael. “Hope to see you soon.”

Michael nodded and kept his eyes on her all the way out the door.

“So, the Summer Queen, huh?” Delaney teased him.
