Chapter 9

Elise

Three weeks later

How is it possible that my life has completely changed for the better in only three weeks?

My second day in Ireland, the one where I woke to find Sullivan staring at me, was the start of something new. My third day in Ireland, Sullivan woke me up early and excitedly showed me around Killaloe, the small town he grew up in. I also met the rest of the Whelan family later on at the Lass and Lion, the family-owned pub. Callum and Finola were behind the bar serving drinks, while Kiernan, his wife Bella, Gareth, and Caitie were sitting at the bar talking. They all welcomed me with open arms, and Callum even offered me a job before the night was over.

I haven’t heard anything about O’Flanagan, and it almost feels like life is getting back to a new normal, except that Sullivan keeps texting back and forth with his boss. Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but I get the feeling there’s something he isn’t telling me.

“Are you and the girls still going out for a girl’s day?” Sullivan asks as he comes up behind me in the bathroom, wrapping his arms around my middle and resting his chin on my shoulder.

I look at him in the mirror and shake my head. He’s been trying to talk me out of going since Bella brought the idea up a few nights ago at family dinner. It’s not that he doesn’t want me to go, but he doesn’t like the idea of me being out of his sight. Hell, he even comes into the pub every night I work and sits at the end of the bar, just to keep an eye on me. I can’t say that I hate it. It’s crazy, but he makes me feel safe, who wouldn’t want that in their lives?

“Sullivan, it’s going to be fine, we'll all be together. Plus, aren’t you going into work today?”

Sullivan scowls at me. “Aye, you had to bring that up again, didn’t ya’?”

I turn around to face him and he picks me up by my hips and sets me on the counter, sliding between my thighs. “I’m going to tell him not to send me on any missions for a while. I can work the cases that are close.”

“You can’t do that. This is your job Sullivan, you can’t put it on hold because of me.”

Sullivan slides his hands up my neck and into my hair. “My job isn’t more important than your safety. If I have to, I’ll quit and find something that isn’t taking me away from you for weeks at a time.”

I sigh and rest my head against his chest. “There has to be another way. I know this job is important to you.”

“Look at me.” When I do, his dark eyes capture mine. “You’re what’s important, my sweet raven, not a job,” He says, then steals a kiss from my lips. When he goes to step away, I cross my legs behind him so he can’t then pull him down for a proper kiss.
