Chapter VIII: Why Am I Doing This Again?
âHey,â Eryn caught up with Yuri the next day during lunchtime. âI havenât seen you all day.â
âSorry, I was busy with classes. Why is everyone in such a rush? Theyâve assigned us homework for a year!â
âItâs the Fall break. Itâs in the end of the month, so professors will be loading us with homework, so it doesnât feel like a break at all. Donât you have that in your realm?â
âBreaks? No. We work all the time.â Yuri didnât know how to feel about the upcoming change but thought he would have more time for exploration.
Eryn shot him a strange look and changed the subject. âSo, I hope yesterday wasnât too embarrassing?â She traced the wooden floor with her foot as the line moved.
âIt was great. Your parents are amazing.â Yuri took some seafood mixed with human treats and looked for a seat. âDonât worry, it was fine,â he reassured her. âSee you later?â
âOf course.â She beamed at him before taking off for her table.
The day went by being busy and the both of them were able to catch up at the library for their studies, upsetting Kyra.
âWill you be joining the Winter Solstice Masquerade Ball?â
Yuri huffed. âAnything else I need to know besides the oh, so disastrous Potion festival that we need to host?â
âI heard about that.â Eryn smiled, but the corners of her mouth fell when she saw his haunted look. âNot good?â
âIt will be a disaster! We need to work with mermaids who all they care about are trinkets and sirens who...!â
âWhen you put it that wayâ¦â She clapped him on the shoulder.
âShhh!â
They eyed Kyra who glared at them behind her glasses. Scribbling something on a piece of paper, she walked to the Science Fiction shelves. When she couldnât reach the top shelf, she shifted into an owl and grabbed the book with her beak.
Yuri twisted his mouth to hide a smile and buried his face in the books. Eryn gripped his hand. They attacked their homework with viciousness, eying the human Kyra. Yuri dared not to upset her more as he didnât want to get a taste of the sharp claws of her bird form.
They resumed their conversation in the safety of the hallway. âDo you need information about the Masquerade Ball?â She found it funny he didnât know the basic human events, but she was so interested to know about his realm that from time to time, she would pick his brain.
âIt sounds terrible since it involves dancing.â
Eryn laughed quietly. âItâs a ball to celebrate the solstice. We need to dress up!â Seeing Yuriâs puzzled expression, she tried not to laugh. âCostumes. Formal wear is required. Come on, it will be fun!â Yuri arched his eyebrow with no trace from her joyous mood. âPlease?â
âIâm not sure. I have to see what to do for the potionsââ
âWe can do both over Fall break. Potions need planning and the ball needs decisions.â
âWhy do I have the sense Iâm going to regret it?â
âYou wonât.
