Chapter VIII: Why Am I Doing This Again?

“Hey,” Eryn caught up with Yuri the next day during lunchtime. “I haven’t seen you all day.”

“Sorry, I was busy with classes. Why is everyone in such a rush? They’ve assigned us homework for a year!”

“It’s the Fall break. It’s in the end of the month, so professors will be loading us with homework, so it doesn’t feel like a break at all. Don’t you have that in your realm?”

“Breaks? No. We work all the time.” Yuri didn’t know how to feel about the upcoming change but thought he would have more time for exploration.

Eryn shot him a strange look and changed the subject. “So, I hope yesterday wasn’t too embarrassing?” She traced the wooden floor with her foot as the line moved.

“It was great. Your parents are amazing.” Yuri took some seafood mixed with human treats and looked for a seat. “Don’t worry, it was fine,” he reassured her. “See you later?”

“Of course.” She beamed at him before taking off for her table.

The day went by being busy and the both of them were able to catch up at the library for their studies, upsetting Kyra.

“Will you be joining the Winter Solstice Masquerade Ball?”

Yuri huffed. “Anything else I need to know besides the oh, so disastrous Potion festival that we need to host?”

“I heard about that.” Eryn smiled, but the corners of her mouth fell when she saw his haunted look. “Not good?”

“It will be a disaster! We need to work with mermaids who all they care about are trinkets and sirens who...!”

“When you put it that way…” She clapped him on the shoulder.

“Shhh!”

They eyed Kyra who glared at them behind her glasses. Scribbling something on a piece of paper, she walked to the Science Fiction shelves. When she couldn’t reach the top shelf, she shifted into an owl and grabbed the book with her beak.

Yuri twisted his mouth to hide a smile and buried his face in the books. Eryn gripped his hand. They attacked their homework with viciousness, eying the human Kyra. Yuri dared not to upset her more as he didn’t want to get a taste of the sharp claws of her bird form.

They resumed their conversation in the safety of the hallway. “Do you need information about the Masquerade Ball?” She found it funny he didn’t know the basic human events, but she was so interested to know about his realm that from time to time, she would pick his brain.

“It sounds terrible since it involves dancing.”

Eryn laughed quietly. “It’s a ball to celebrate the solstice. We need to dress up!” Seeing Yuri’s puzzled expression, she tried not to laugh. “Costumes. Formal wear is required. Come on, it will be fun!” Yuri arched his eyebrow with no trace from her joyous mood. “Please?”

“I’m not sure. I have to see what to do for the potions—”

“We can do both over Fall break. Potions need planning and the ball needs decisions.”

“Why do I have the sense I’m going to regret it?”

“You won’t.
