The Journeys

Thank goodness that feet last longer than tires do.

When I was growing up, we spent our summers on Nuttings Lake in Billerica, Massachusetts. We would stay there all summer while my dad, Francis “Macadoo” McGillivray, commuted to his job at the can company in Everett. The summer house was officially named the Merri-Macs, but we all referred to it simply as “the camp.” It was built in 1927 by my grandfather, along with some help from my dad.

Each Labor Day weekend, the lake’s Sunnyside Improvement Association put on a series of sporting events and games to end the season. Most of the attendees were summer residents, and the three-legged race, canoe race, and pie-eating contests were our way of saying good-bye to summer. There were road races, too. According to my dad, I was around 5 years old when I entered the boys’ race for my age group—probably about 100 yards. It was my first race ever. And I won! It’s probably my only win that’s captured on film, and certainly the only one filmed on 8 millimeter.

He was this little boy who had so much energy, he would just go, go, go, go all day long. At night, he would fall asleep in the living room. When he was done, he was totally wiped out. He was exhausted.
