Chapter 11

The Duke of Bedford was incandescent with rage when we told him of the treachery. At first, he disbelieved us but the detail we gave left him no choice but to finally agree with us. “And where will this traitor be?”

Sir John said, “From what Sir Michael says it is obvious, he will flee to the constable who will waste no time gathering a force to take our convoy!”

The duke stroked his beard, “And you would abandon the attempt?”

Sir John laughed, “That was not what we meant, my lord. Of course, we will take the supplies. The alternative is to give in and neither Sir Michael nor myself would ever contemplate that. We shall leave on the morrow and hope to beat the Constable to Orleans for the traitor thought we would leave the following day!” He nodded to me, “We will trust to Sir Michael’s scouts and the Englishmen who will do as they have always done and fight well! Agincourt showed us that a few men can work miracles if they are well led and have a stout defence. We have plans, my lord and strategies for when we are attacked.”

“You know that you will be attacked and yet you are still happy to go?”

Sir John smiled, “Of course.”

While Sir John spoke with the carters and his men, I gathered my small company. They had enjoyed their time in Paris. Sir John and his men were good company. Sleeping in good rooms with a fine roof and eating well had strengthened their resolve and all were happy to return to the fray. I did not mask my words with marchpane. I was honest, just as Sir William had always been honest when delivering such bleak news. “The French, thanks to a traitor, know that we are coming, and I believe that the Constable of France himself will lead not a raiding party but an army to stop us.” I noticed Sir Robert stiffening when I mentioned the name of the man he hated. “We can do nothing about this for, as you all know, the garrisons of the bastilles around Orléans will need both the food and the arrows which we take. We have three hundred wagons to protect as well as those who will march on foot beside them. Those men will augment our garrisons in the bastilles and we need to ensure that as many as possible reach Orléans. Edgar, you and Nicholas, along with the rest of Weedon’s archers, will be the advanced scouts. When you find the French then you must return directly to us. Our plan is a simple one: we make the wagons into a fort and use our arrows to deter them. Captain William, you will command the archers. In addition to the ones we bring Sir John has another one hundred and there are another two hundred men who can use bows. They may not be the quality of the ones you lead but you must mould them as best you can.
