Chapter Eleven

Wyecroft Forest was anything but ordinary. In the mere moments Japheth and Lucinda had spent within its borders, the trees had changed, the vegetation had shifted, and the various life-forms within had scurried and flown about wildly. This was a forest that was continuously in motion, a pulsing, evolving life-form in itself that contained a marvelous world. Oddly enough, there was nothing surrounding the forest for as far as the eye could see. It was as though its allure was so strong that everything all around it had been drawn in and absorbed into the ecosystem.

“This territory is uncharted. We are fortunate that Cato was able to narrow the location down so precisely,” Japheth stated as he tried to get a better look.

“He is definitely in possession of great power,” Lucinda said thoughtfully.

A strange sound that started as a growl and ended with a shriek emitted from within the forest. Japheth and Lucinda froze in place.

“I must admit, I don’t have much experience with the wildlife in Evlontus,” Japheth mumbled nervously.

“Nor do I. Seems like there is never enough time in the day to truly experience the magnificence of our realm. There are no trails that I can see. It will be difficult to navigate,” Lucinda said as she looked around a tall redwood tree, holding on to its trunk for support.

The roots of the redwood suddenly came up from the ground and grew, spreading farther out and taking the tree backward before settling in the ground once more. Lucinda jumped back in surprise and looked at Japheth.

“It is a place not meant for mortals, undoubtedly,” Japheth answered curiously as he too tried to peer inside.

“I’ve been in it,” said a voice from behind them.

Japheth and Lucinda turned around, completely startled. Cassius stepped forward with his arms crossed, looking far more put together than either had seen him in the year that had passed.

“Father! Have you come to assist us?” she asked and gave him a gentle hug. Cassius smiled at her and offered a simple nod in response.

“You look well,” Japheth stated with an air of suspicion.

“A day off the booze does a body good,” Cassius replied dismissively and peered into the forest.

“How did you find us?” Lucinda asked.

“Cato told me you were looking for Wyecroft Forest. Magnus and I found it when we were just boys. He dared me to walk to the center and back. Said it would be the only way to prove my worth,” Cassius answered and laughed to himself.

“Always looking out for your best interests,” Japhet said with a disapproving look.

“He knows how to keep things interesting. It is true what the legends say: this forest moves and changes from moment to moment. It is dangerous to traverse. Lucinda, perhaps you should—”

“Oh, I’m going with you. Don’t even try it, Father,” she interrupted hastily.

“I commend your bravery,” Cassius conceded and bowed his head respectfully. “We will need Japheth’s gift of sight to anticipate changes in the terrain. It is your instincts that will guide us through to the center.
