MY ENTIRE LIFE, I ALWAYS WISHED I could be more like my sister. Despite only being one month older, Hattie was always stronger, louder, prouder, and just more everything than me. And I know, I know. By this point, that’s old news.

What may be new news, though, is that there was one area in our lives in which I always excelled. One activity where I was always superior to Hattie.

Mini golf.

Yup. I know, it’s not even real golf. It’s just the putting part. But still. I’ve always been good at it. There’s this place, Zany Zoo Mini Golf, where our parents used to take us as kids. There were only nine holes, but the place was decked out with humongous animals. You’d have to hit the ball up the narrow path of a giraffe’s bent-over neck, or make it bounce off a Tasmanian devil to avoid falling into the small pond, and of course, the ninth hole—my personal fave—where you’d have to make the ball shoot straight into the hippo’s mouth. A hole in one there scored you a free ice cream. A two-scoop, in fact. On a waffle cone! Not to hoot my own horn, but I had a lot of free ice cream at Zany Zoo Mini Golf. Just saying.

The funny thing is that, as I’ve said before—Hattie is stronger, she has better aim, and she’s more competitive. But her downfall is that she’s impatient and impulsive. And that’s where I have the upper hand. While Hattie just hits the ball willy-nilly and hopes for the best, I think hard before I make my shots. I study the angles, I do the calculations, I think a few moves ahead like I’m playing baduk. And I always do several practice shots without the ball just to get a feel of the swing before committing. Sure, it makes for long games, and it drives Hattie bonkers, but what can I say? It works for me.

That’s why, as Areum lands in a large, empty parking lot, having followed Sahm’s directions, I feel a sense of excitement blooming inside me. If being good at mini golf is going to score me that fidget spinner, then perhaps I do have what it takes to win this tournament, after all. Maybe the prophecy is actually going to come true, my imposter syndrome be damned. I take out one of the poop-shaped gummies from my pocket and pop one into my mouth. Like David said, it’s cola flavor, which honestly, is such a relief.

“Hey, before we go in,” I say to my inmyeonjo, “can I ask you a question about Sahm?”

She nods. “Of course, Riley Oh.”

“You keep calling him Sahm of the Sisterhood. What is that?”

“The Sisterhood of the Inmyeonjo is the convent in which I grew up, Riley Oh. Sahm was born with one wing, and he was rejected by his flock of three-legged crows for it. They deemed him faulty. Broken.” She screeches angrily. “He was abandoned by his kin, and the Sisterhood took him in.
