COMMUNICATION

MOTH ORCHID

Phalaenopsis spp.

Meanings

compassion, shield, consciousness, peace, sensuality

Uses

Moth Orchids make good bedroom plants because they heighten sensuality, (as all orchids commonly do) and they inspire peace and provide support for all levels of consciousness. Another interesting benefit of the Moth Orchid is that it works as a shield for unwanted energy. It also facilitates communication, so is excellent on reception desks and service counters and in the entrances of homes or living areas. Give to another to say, ‘I am thinking of you’, ‘Let’s talk’ or ‘I wish you peace’.

CARE

houseplant maintenance level = easy

Profile

Gracefully arching long stems of orchid flowers rise above the foliage of the Moth Orchid. They are native to parts of Asia and South-East Asia, Australia and New Guinea. These flowers can blossom at any time of the year, last up to a month and, with care, can re-flower. The low-growing foliage base of large dark sage-green oval leaves still makes a lovely green houseplant even without the magnificent flowers. In the wild, this epiphyte grows up to 90cm (2ft) in height.

Container & Soil

Moth Orchids are prone to root rot, so pot in a container that has holes so that water can completely drain. Do not grow in standard potting, compost or soil mixes; rather, a commercial orchid preparation or chipped bark is best.

Position & Light

This plant requires bright light, but it must be indirect. Harsh, full light will be detrimental. It enjoys moderate humidity.

Water

Moth Orchids will grow best if they are watered with the purest water you can find. This could be rainwater or distilled water. Do not overwater and allow the top of growing medium to dry out slightly between watering. Mist to raise humidity and ensure that aerial roots stay hydrated.

Food

Moth Orchids will need to be fed every two weeks with a liquid-based fertiliser.

Pruning & Grooming

To encourage new blooms, prune the spent flower just above the second band on the stem, from the bottom.

Grow More Plants

If shoots develop at the base of the plant, wait until roots begin to form and then carefully remove and re-pot. The new shoot will need a warmer environment, very little water and bright filtered conditions for the first six weeks until it has established.
