Chapter Twenty-One: Gatehouse, Mystic Albion, Now
Norris awoke, confused.
He felt tired, his body aching as if he had pushed himself past the point of rationality. He thought, for a confused moment, that he hadnât slept at all. It had been dark when he had gone to bed, and now the sunlight was streaming through the windows. And yet ... it was hard not to lie back and close his eyes again. He wanted to sleep in and yet he had promised Marion they would go for a walk. He staggered out of bed, arms and legs protesting loudly. He hadnât felt so bad since heâd been forced to go on what his PE teacher had called a cross-country run. The fact the route had barely taken them out of the estate, and had been carefully chosen to avoid any parks, remained unmentioned. Norris had come in last, and he had hated every last moment of it.
The aching didnât get any better as he stumbled into the bathroom and staggered into the shower. It was hard not to feel a flicker of panic as he saw his dormmate brushing his teeth, old instincts insisting heâd walked into a trap, even though his dormmates hadnât been remotely unpleasant. Some had been friendly, some had been reserved; the bullying heâd expected and feared simply hadnât materialised. Norris cursed his old school as he washed himself in the shower, then made his way back out to dress. His education would have been so much more pleasant if the bullies had been expelled the moment theyâd shown their true natures. There was nothing to be gained by tolerating them.
He dressed quickly, then picked up his knapsack and checked the protective spells. The Hand of Glory was positioned at the bottom, shrouded in enough subtle magic to ensure no one should be able to see it unless they already knew it was there. He dumped the rest of his notes beside it, then stuffed the cloak into the bag to cover them, just in case. A dozen cover stories ran through his mind, each one more implausible that the last, as he swung the bag over his shoulder and hurried out of the dorm. He didnât want to be late for the date ...
His thoughts seemed to jar to a halt. It was a date?
It was unbelievable. Girls never showed any interest in him, except when they wanted to torment him. He had found it hard to accept that Marion might like him as a friend, let alone anything else; he had spent weeks - it felt like years - waiting for the penny to drop, for her to ghost him or to laugh in his face and make fun of him for thinking she might be interested in him. It hadnât helped that Norris2 had kept reminding him of the danger of saying the wrong thing to a person who might notice, particularly when they have no idea of what the wrong thing might be. Norris
