Bernie’s fur tickled my nose as he sat on my lap, craning his head to see where we were headed. He was bent out of shape about missing out on Dave’s big revelations, but the bacon had soothed his wounded feelings. A little. He was still griping about it.

“I don’t know why I can’t go into Jill’s with you,” he said, digging his claws into my thigh as we rounded a corner on the highway. “It would be so much easier. And then, my bacon would be nice and hot instead of cold. I call that a win.”

“Jill may not feel that way if the health inspector showed up. The only animals allowed inside restaurants are support animals.”

“Are you saying I don’t offer enough support?” Bernie said, turning the full force of his glare at me. “Are you really going there? Do you know how much emotional, spiritual and physical support I supply daily?”

“You’d have to wear a vest,” I said, hoping to hold back the tide of his outrage. “You’re not a big fan of wearing clothes.”

“I believe I can make an exception if it will get me fresh, piping hot bacon. And information, of course.”

“Of course,” I said, smothering the laugh that threatened to bubble up. “We’ll see what we can do. I’m sure Dave would know how we could get a training certificate for you. You might need to go to a class or something.”

Zane laughed softly and then bit his lip when Bernie turned to glare at him.

“Sorry. Continue.”

“I’m just saying...”

I needed to derail this train of thought before we had to take Bernie into every restaurant we went to. I stroked his back and went with a distraction.

“We’ll bring you inside Zed’s office, just like we do when we visit Dave. You can go in your bag. And after this is done, I promise, we’ll look into ways so you can eat with us at Jill’s.”

“Hmph. Fine. I’m holding you to it, though.”

I didn’t need to translate Bernie’s words. His body language spoke volumes. A smile crept across Zane’s face as we headed back towards Sheridan. We’d made an appointment to see Zed, and I couldn’t wait to meet the man face-to-face. He’d seemed like a character during our quick phone call.

“You don’t think Argider will cause more problems while Sophie and Stacia are alone, do you?”

I shook my head.

“I think we’ve appeased her, at least for a little while. Sophie plans to continue sorting through all the pages with Stacia’s help. I think between the two of them, they’ll be able to round up all the diaries and start piecing them together.”

“I wonder what she wrote in there,” Zane said, his voice soft. “I’ve always wanted to meet people who lived in that time period. It’s cool. I can at least sort of see them with my camera. But to talk to them, and ask them questions. That is such a gift, Brynn.”

He was right. It was a gift. All too often I got
