Bernieâs fur tickled my nose as he sat on my lap, craning his head to see where we were headed. He was bent out of shape about missing out on Daveâs big revelations, but the bacon had soothed his wounded feelings. A little. He was still griping about it.
âI donât know why I canât go into Jillâs with you,â he said, digging his claws into my thigh as we rounded a corner on the highway. âIt would be so much easier. And then, my bacon would be nice and hot instead of cold. I call that a win.â
âJill may not feel that way if the health inspector showed up. The only animals allowed inside restaurants are support animals.â
âAre you saying I donât offer enough support?â Bernie said, turning the full force of his glare at me. âAre you really going there? Do you know how much emotional, spiritual and physical support I supply daily?â
âYouâd have to wear a vest,â I said, hoping to hold back the tide of his outrage. âYouâre not a big fan of wearing clothes.â
âI believe I can make an exception if it will get me fresh, piping hot bacon. And information, of course.â
âOf course,â I said, smothering the laugh that threatened to bubble up. âWeâll see what we can do. Iâm sure Dave would know how we could get a training certificate for you. You might need to go to a class or something.â
Zane laughed softly and then bit his lip when Bernie turned to glare at him.
âSorry. Continue.â
âIâm just saying...â
I needed to derail this train of thought before we had to take Bernie into every restaurant we went to. I stroked his back and went with a distraction.
âWeâll bring you inside Zedâs office, just like we do when we visit Dave. You can go in your bag. And after this is done, I promise, weâll look into ways so you can eat with us at Jillâs.â
âHmph. Fine. Iâm holding you to it, though.â
I didnât need to translate Bernieâs words. His body language spoke volumes. A smile crept across Zaneâs face as we headed back towards Sheridan. Weâd made an appointment to see Zed, and I couldnât wait to meet the man face-to-face. Heâd seemed like a character during our quick phone call.
âYou donât think Argider will cause more problems while Sophie and Stacia are alone, do you?â
I shook my head.
âI think weâve appeased her, at least for a little while. Sophie plans to continue sorting through all the pages with Staciaâs help. I think between the two of them, theyâll be able to round up all the diaries and start piecing them together.â
âI wonder what she wrote in there,â Zane said, his voice soft. âIâve always wanted to meet people who lived in that time period. Itâs cool. I can at least sort of see them with my camera. But to talk to them, and ask them questions. That is such a gift, Brynn.â
He was right. It was a gift. All too often I got
