Although his voice was sad, his features remained composed. He looked like somebody who had unexpectedly gotten up and decided to leave after playing a board game at a friend’s home.

Kouga Gennosuke quietly rolled up the scroll and placed it inside his kimono. His sword drooping from his hand, he went onto the veranda and looked out onto the garden. No—he wasn’t looking anywhere. His eyes were half shut, as if he were still asleep.

“Let’s kill him!” roared Mino Nenki.

“Wait!” shouted Yakushiji Tenzen at the same moment.

The other Iga warriors could not understand why Tenzen was still holding them back. Gennosuke resembled a gloomy flower in the misty rain. What was so dangerous about him?

Tenzen and Nenki had both shouted at the same time. As if choosing which voice they preferred to hear, six Iga samurai near the front of the veranda charged.

Instantly, a golden light shone back upon the six flashing blades. Gennosuke’s eyes!

The rays of light from his eyes looked like streams of melted gold. The six attacking Iga samurais staggered, twisted, collapsed. They became a whirlwind of blood, their swords slashing, slicing. All of them were dead. Their shoulders and chest and necks had been hacked apart—not by each other, but by their own blades.

“Gyoubu, let’s go.” Gennosuke stepped into the garden as if nothing had happened. Once again he closed his eyes halfway. His footsteps were inaudible. Kasumi Gyoubu followed him, grinning at the stunned Iga fighters.

The vast crowd of Iga warriors were frozen in place, petrified with fear. Tenzen had often told them about Gennosuke’s basilisk eyes. But this was the first time that they had witnessed it. Six had died before their eyes. And Gennosuke had done it without the slightest effort.

What were Gennosuke’s basilisk eyes?

Their power consisted of intense hypnotism. Anyone harboring the desire to harm or kill Gennosuke would be destroyed by his eyes. No matter how much they tried to avoid his powers, they were drawn into looking at his eyes and became absorbed in them. Gennosuke’s eyes would then release a spark of golden light. That flash of light affected the enemy’s nervous system. Instantly, his attackers fell into a trance, attacking their allies and sometimes hacking at themselves with their weapons. No matter what ninja talent an attacker intended to use against Gennosuke, it would rebound against the perpetrator.

Gennosuke hung his head and folded his arms, walking across the garden toward the gate. He seemed deep in meditation. Was he lamenting the renewal of warfare between Kouga and Iga? Or thinking of the Kouga warriors whose names had already been crossed off the list?

Just the act of watching this seemingly defenseless man walk across the garden affected the Iga fighters. They watched him go. They seemed to be bound hand and foot, unable to move to stop him.

“I will kill him.” The voice belonged to Chikuma Koshirou.

“Koshirou—” Tenzen began. He turned his bloodshot eyes to the side. “Don’t let that one escape! The pride of Iga is on your shoulders—”

Tenzen seemed to be pushing Koshirou forward into a duel to the death.
