The Social Pecking Order

There is a specific pecking order between all South Koreans, and until this order is established and recognized there can be very little interaction or harmony. Every new employee introduced into a South Korean group immediately begins steps to find his or her place in the hierarchy. They cannot rest until this is done.

This social pecking order can cause serious problems to the foreign manager who is not aware of it or plays it down. It often happens that the newly arrived Westerner will hire someone for a managerial position simply because he speaks English or has relevant technical knowledge, without considering his educational background or the other things that determine his social position in South Korean society. The foreigner may then hire other people who have a higher social status to work under this manager.

The friction that is likely to result from this situation can seriously affect the operation of the whole company. Experienced expatriates in South Korea avoid this problem by determining the social status of prospective employees themselves, or relying on the input of senior Korean advisors who know how the system works and how to pick the right person for the right job.
