Chapter 11

“Are you sure you didn’t pick up on anything?” Peggy said as we drove away from Diana’s house thirty minutes later.

“I’m sure. Diana isn’t our suspect. She’s just a kindly old lady.”

Peggy’s tone was suspicious. “Is it all an act? Has she got bodies buried in the garden? I’m not discounting her yet.” Her tone brightened. “Although, she did make a super cup of tea. And I did like reminiscing about the past with her.”

“Who are we seeing next?”

“A woman called Elaine. We’d better hurry up. I told her we’d be there before eleven. That Diana kept us chatting for too long.”

“You did a lot of the chatting,” I pointed out.

“I was gaining her trust. That’s what investigators do. Turn left at this roundabout. Have you heard anything from Seb yet?”

“I haven’t. I checked my phone just before we set off.”

“We’ll take that as good news. Take the second right.”

We arrived at Elaine’s house. She opened the door to us and a strong smell of perfume wafted over us. She was the total opposite of Diana. Despite being in her late years, Elaine looked radiant and full of health. She was wearing jeans and a silk shirt. A scarf was arranged elegantly around her neck. I could never get my scarves to look like that. Her face was perfectly made-up, and her hair was thick and shiny.

She gave us a warm smile of welcome and said, “I’d almost given up on you. Do come in. I’m afraid I haven’t got long to talk to you. I’m going out on a date in ten minutes.” She paused and her smile increased. “It’s a blind date. I met him online. Have you ever tried online dating? It’s a marvel. My daughter told me all about it, and she showed me which sites to go on. I’ve had five dates so far this month. It’s an absolute hoot! Come in.”

I shared a look with Peggy and then followed Elaine into her living room. It was tastefully furnished and the furniture was expensive looking. I did notice a knitting bag half-hidden behind a chair.

Elaine perched on the end of her armchair and placed her hands on her knees. Her back was straight and her look direct. She said, “Peggy, you said on the phone you might have something which belonged to me.”

“I did.” Peggy handed her the pattern.

Elaine smiled when she looked at the image. “This does look like something I would have made. I do like the clean lines of this twin set.” Her smile grew. “I have a set of pearls just like these. They’re not real, but they’re good imitation ones.”

“Is that your pattern?” Peggy asked.

“It might be. It might not be. Mum bought a lot of patterns for me. She insisted on me taking up knitting. She said it was a skill that would stay with me for life.” She lowered the pattern. “Between you and me, I think she wanted me to spend more time at home and less time out with my friends.
