Chapter Nineteen

"Good morning!" Amsalla spotted Liara and Nagarath the moment they entered the common room. That Anisthe had omitted to mention his aurenaurae at all still infuriated Amsalla.

Even from across the crowded space, she could see the girl—Nagarath's pet—stiffen. Liara, in fact, looked as though she might dart into any dark corner at a moment's notice. Still suspicious, then. Poor dear. The smiles that greeted Amsalla? Equally wooden. Quite a contrast to her own dazzling expression of warmth and morning sunshine.

However, Amsalla's mind strayed elsewhere as the two approached her table to bid her good day. She still tried to figure out if wizard and apprentice traveled under a cover story. Rumor had it that the two had not procured separate lodgings. But beyond that, there was little more to say. For Amsalla, that could mean only one thing. She tried to turn her mind from such a possibility, aware of a rare twinge of jealousy.

Perhaps it was Liara's tender age, though—Amsalla guessed she was but eighteen—that kept the two travelers so close together. Nagarath had always been the chivalrous one and more than a little bit protective. This second conclusion satisfied Amsalla's possessive streak.

"Good morning, Nagarath." She let her arm drape over the air. Pitiful poor surroundings though they may be, there was no reason to skimp on formalities. Especially as they seemed to make Liara so deliciously uncomfortable.

"I hadn't known you lodged here, Amsalla. I was under the impression that you were going out of your way to stay as long as dinner last night." Nagarath ignored her waiting fingers.

"For all that it's a shabby, common little place, they do offer a decent night's rest," Amsalla said. She moved over on the heavy wooden bench to make room for Nagarath. "And you two look positively radiant. I suppose I'll have to learn your secrets so that I'm able to keep up."

Nagarath accepted the news with coolness. She could feel him steeling himself, vowing to not get ruffled.

Liara took Nagarath's lead with less seamless grace. The girl hid her scowl by giving the woodwork of their table a close examination.

Oh, the two of them were most decidedly up to something. But what?

Amsalla had decided to make it her business to find out. She doubted that it would be difficult to change her own plans for the immediate future. Staying alongside Nagarath would ...he better suited Amsalla's needs at present, provided Anisthe's daughter hadn't too big a hold on the man. She raked the girl a penetrating gaze. "How could one pass up the opportunity to observe first-hand what is left of Anisthe's talents? And besides, traveling with another woman will offer our little party the respectability you currently lack. Fewer prying eyes may turn your way should I join you as the girl's chaperone."

"Yes, and you want to spy on whatever it is I am up to with my apprentice."

"Oh, you have me all wrong, dear. You did already tell me that you're following Anisthe for his health—and the health of his, ahem, surrogate powers.
