Chapter Fifteen

Ginny

She stumbled through the doors of SLRC with a sweaty upper lip and a sour stomach. It was such a strange feeling, like her body was betraying her. She hadn’t been able to eat breakfast, and her stomach kept moaning with an uncomfortable rumble. Her usual high reserve of energy was depleted, but nothing was going to stop her from doing her job today. There was work to be done.

"Ginny, you look like hell," Elizabeth said as she passed her in the break room.

"Thank you, dear. I’m not feeling so well."

"Maybe you got the flu that’s going around."

"No, it can’t be that. I don’t get sick."

"Maybe not, but you sure look sick now."

Ginny didn’t answer—she didn’t have the energy to. She pulled off her jacket and hung it in her locker. She sipped some Gatorade and gathered her belongings for the day, ready to work.

Elizabeth stared at her as she went about her preparations. "You know, no one would judge you if you took a sick day."

"I don’t need a sick d—" Ginny covered her mouth with her hand as she burped. "Excuse me. As I was saying, I don’t need a—" she cut off again, running toward the staff bathroom in the break room, while Elizabeth stood there watching. There wasn’t even time to close the door. She puked into the toilet until her stomach was empty, and she was dry heaving.

Elizabeth shifted her feet and moved the zipper of her jacket up and down. "Um, Gin, is there anything I can do to help you?"

Ginny looked up at her as she kneeled over the toilet. "Can you let Susan know I’m taking a sick day?"
