He came round, lying on the bed in his room at Cybultna’s apartment. A face he didn’t recognize was bending over him, looking serious. Beyond him, Standish could see the pale face of Anna, and the worried face of Zbigniev. There was no sign of Peters. He moved his head, wincing at the pain, and saw a cloud of cigarette smoke wreathing out of the armchair.

Anna saw his glance and moved to his side. ‘Yes, Peters is safe. This is Doctor Powazki. He says that you should be all right but there is internal wounding that could prove fatal if you try and move, for quite a long time.’

Opening his lips was more difficult than he remembered, but he succeeded in framing the words he wanted. ‘How long before move?’

It was the doctor who answered him. ‘You are very lucky to be alive, Englishman. If you’d been bending over the other way when the bullet hit you, it would have ripped out most of the inside of your chest. As it is ... a few ribs cracked and a collar-bone gone. Those will heal in a couple of weeks. But, I think there may be some internal injuries. There is some bleeding that I cannot trace. If I could get you into my hospital... but that is out of the question. So, I do not think you can take a chance.’ He saw Standish’s lips moving again and guessed the question. ‘How long? It is now near to the end of March. I think you should be up and walking by the end of next month. Fit enough to travel back to England by the end of the month after that. You will be in time to see most of your cricket matches. Eh!’

Though it couldn’t be evening yet, the room seemed to be getting dark. A pleasant lethargy spread over his limbs. But, there was something that he had to say. Something that couldn’t wait. Anna leant over him, to try and catch the faint words.

‘Peters. Krauts’ll turn this city upside-down about this raid. Bound to find out about English. If tries to go ... if tries to get out alone. Get him. Tell father you must watch him and stop in house here. Till... till I’m well again. You understand?’

She nodded, feeling a tear gather at the corner of her eyes. ‘Don’t worry, Pan Standish. It will all be as you want.’

‘Bloody better. Otherwise. Know what I’d do? Don’t you Anna? Christ, turn the light on. Bloody dark!’

His head sank back on the pillow, and he fell into a deep sleep.

Zbigniev poured himself another drink.

The doctor closed his bag with a click that sounded unnaturally loud in the quiet room.

Anna pulled up one of the straight-backed chairs and sat down beside the bed.

Leslie Peters, plucked from the unfriendly hands of the Gestapo, drew hard on the cigarette, and coughed as the cheap tobacco rasped at his throat.
