The cool nighttime air dried the sweat on Vokkert’s face. He and his guards went back through the crowded district the way they’d come. Vokkert wasn’t thinking about Joris any longer. He’d completed the task. The night had a full agenda, and it was time to focus on the next job.

The cell phone inside his coat rang. He answered. He already knew who waited on the other end.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

The soft voice of Evelien Eulen responded.

“They’re here. Waiting for you.”

“I ran long.”

“Are you done?”

“Yes, on my way.”

“Mission accomplished?”

“Joris has been subdued, yes.” He slowed his pace to be able to walk and talk at the same time.

“How hard did you hit him?”

Vokkert sighed. Evelien’s obsession with violence grated on him sometimes.

“We left him drooling on the carpet, honey.”

“Oh, poor Joris,” she said. “I’ll be waiting for you when the meeting is over. I’ll wear your favorite nightie.”

Which meant no nightie.

But Vokkert didn’t smile or respond with enthusiasm. Work was on his mind. Work, then fun. Maybe. Sometimes work remained on his mind even when the job ended for the night, which made fun impossible.

“I’ll try not to keep you waiting very long.”

“Tell me, darling, did he beg?”

“Stop it.”

“No, tell me.”

“He kicked me.”

“Not in your magic wand, I hope. Do you need me to kiss it and make it better?” She laughed.

“Fix a drink and calm down, you animal.”

Evelien laughed again and hung up.

By the time Vokkert reached his car a few blocks away, he’d forgotten the conversation. He had ten men waiting for him in a conference room. They had another problem to talk about.
