Juliet vomited into a basin.

“Well, perhaps a purge won’t be necessary if you carry on like that,” Oletta said less than optimistically. She opened a small chest by her cot bed and rummaged through it. “I have nothing that will render you unconscious. Perhaps if I crept into the still room, pinched a few medicinal herbs… but that means leaving you for a moment. Can you cope?”

Juliet lifted her head and wiped her chin with a napkin. “This can’t be happening. Can’t Stefan simply refuse? What man watches another for the purposes of entertainment?”

“A vile one, I should say. Here, it seems, it is quite acceptable. These Barranto men are barbarians. Curse them.” Oletta slammed the chest lid down. “If this doesn’t work, he’ll have to try something else. I won’t stand by and let the duke do it himself—”

“No! You mustn’t interfere.”

Oletta held out her arms. “Oh, dearest, is it impossible to make this sacrifice to save both of you from a worse fate?”

Juliet ran into her maid’s embrace and sobbed. “Don’t, don’t. He loves me, I know he does. And what we do together is precious and wonderful, and nothing will replace it. He won’t do it if he thinks I cannot, and I’ll rather throw myself off the ramparts than let Nardin humiliate me. For if Stefan refuses, Nardin will take his place with glee.”

Oletta wiped the tears from Juliet’s face. “Throw yourself to your death. Don’t say such a terrible thing. If this purge doesn’t work, you must go through with the spectacle, for both of your sakes. You’re not Juliet, but Juvieta, a mistress of no consequence who serves her lord. If you resist, refuse, or anything, you will betray your origins. Now let me go and find a drug or something, please.”

Alone, Juliet paced the small room, cursing the duke, and wishing she was in Stefan’s protective arms. Time passed too quickly, and there was no sign of Oletta.

What should she do? Was it such an awful thing to be fucked publicly? Would it not show her devotion to Stefan, which was genuine? Could she not arouse herself by being the centre of his attention, everyone’s attention? She sat on the edge of the cot and tried hard to imagine what it might feel like to be so desired. Men ogling her, and Stefan envious.

It was possible. She might be able to, as long as he wasn’t harsh. She knew he wasn’t a beastly man. He might make a play of it, but he wouldn’t harm her. Yet, it wouldn’t end there. She would be passed around and used, for he had no claim to her like the bond of marriage.

She hated the duke. In truth, she was really his, and here he was, unwittingly encouraging another man to fuck her. If only Nardin knew… He mustn’t though. Stefan’s head would be on a spike.

There was a knock on the door. She turned, smiling; Oletta was back. But it wasn’t her maid. It was the man in the black cloak, and he was grinning from ear to ear.
