Sleet hit the windows of Zane’s Jeep as we pulled to a stop in front of Daniel’s office. I huddled into my coat. Early daffodils, planted outside the building, bravely stood as the rain battered their sunny yellow petals. Bernie looked out the window and grumbled.

“It figures. A cat can’t avoid getting wet this time of year.”

“You’ve got two choices,” I said, stroking his head. “I can bundle you in my coat or put you in your bag.”

In a split second, he decided.

“Coat. And make sure you zip it all the way up. It looks cold out there.”

Mallory shook her head as she unbuckled her seat belt and slid out.

“I was hoping it was finally Spring, but it looks like winter still hasn’t had its last say, huh?”

“Sometimes it can still snow in May,” I said, cradling Bernie as I zipped my coat over him. “I think once or twice it’s snowed in June.”

Mallory groaned and shoved her hands deep into her pockets.

“Not helping, Brynn.”

“Sorry. You’ll get used to it, though. And it makes you appreciate the nice weather we get all the more.”

We hustled inside the building and Daniel went ahead, flipping the lights on as he went. The heating system rumbled to life as I unzipped my coat and freed Bernie. He thumped down on the carpet, gave himself a shake, and started grooming his fur back into place.

“I’ll grab an extra chair from the back,” Daniel said, popping his head back into the office. “Make yourselves comfortable. Anyone want a coffee?”

The three of us said yes, and Daniel nodded before disappearing again. Zane took off his coat and moved to the window to look out over downtown Deadwood. I joined him and threaded my arm through his.

“It’s a cute little town, isn’t it? Even in this dreary weather, it still has a certain charm.”

He nodded and pulled me closer to his side.

“And the colder weather means more cuddle time, so I won’t gripe too much about it.”

Daniel came back into the office, carrying a chair, and we moved to take our places across from his desk. He fired up the instant coffee maker behind his desk and took a seat with a sigh.

“So, we need to look up both McInnes brothers, and then I’d like to do a criminal history search. I don’t know if we’ll have any luck there, since it was so long ago, but it’s worth a try.”

I nodded and crossed my legs, right as Bernie vaulted into my lap. I held him steady while we both got comfortable.

“If you can’t find anything, the sheriff’s office has an amazing archive. I’ve used it a few times. It’s dusty, but they’ve kept everything dating back to when this was just a territory.”

Daniel smiled and began passing out the coffee mugs. Mallory was first, and she took her mug with a special smile.

“You remembered.”

“Of course I did,” Daniel said, scratching the back of his head. “I stocked up on hazelnut pods in case you came by the office.
